gizmo.john Posted October 23, 2009 Report Posted October 23, 2009 Hi I have a fault on my steering. First thing in the morning its fine for about a mile then it starts to wander. Today I tested it going down hill with a number of left and right corners, I switched the engine off (as if i was being towed) and had to use all my strength just to get it around the corner. Has anyone ever experienced this before? It's a 2.3 petrol on a T plate. Quote
Saif Rehman Posted October 23, 2009 Report Posted October 23, 2009 I switched the engine off (as if i was being towed) and had to use all my strength just to get it around the corner. That's because the power steering isn't working with the engine off - not recommended! Check the power steering fluid, wheels and tyres and tyre pressures. Quote
gizmo.john Posted October 23, 2009 Author Report Posted October 23, 2009 Thanks for your reply but doing the test that i done' my power steering pump worked when i bumped started the engine as steering went light again but the play came back that's why i asked if anyone has had this before??!! big_kev Posted October 24, 2009 Report Posted October 24, 2009 Test your steering with the vehicle stationery ( but with engine running ). Gravel or grass is best as it places less load on the system. See how much free play there is ( if any ) between moving the steering wheel and the front wheels turning. If there is none ( or very little ) then the problem is with the tyres and/or suspension. Quote
Saif Rehman Posted October 24, 2009 Report Posted October 24, 2009 Check the belts too, BTW - have you got a undertray fitted? If not, that could be half your problem. Quote

TonyD Posted October 29, 2009 Report Posted October 29, 2009 have you got a undertray fitted? If not, that could be half your problem. Sorry for being a bit stupid; what can happen if I leave the undertray off my Galaxy? I removed mine t change the oil and didn't refit it. Quote

For a start, water will get into the power steering area and could cause power steering failure amongst other things, the undershield is there for a reason, please for a sake of a few quid or time have it reinstalled. I think I'll crawl under the Galaxy first thing in the morning. I'd rather try to refit it than open a whole can of worms! Thanks for the advice. Now where did I put the bolts? Quote
