HI all

I have a 1998 2.3 glx and it some times makes a noise on start up like you have held the key on to long if you know what i mean.. just wondering if any one else has had this do you think it is the starter solenoid and do's that mean i have to replace the whole starter of is it possable to just replace the solenoid other than the noise the car starts first time no probs..

thanks

This happened to me when my battery was getting marginal, the colder mornings will lower your battery output slightly. Give it a top-up charge (especially if it does a lot of stop-start shorter journeys) and see if it improves.

This is just probably the bendex gear on the starter motor sticking. Disconnect the battery and remove the starter motor making a note of where the cables connect to. Use some WD40 to clean the bendex gear and spline until the gear glides up the spline freely. Do not lubricate it as this will attract dust and cause the same symptoms.

Hope this helps

I've noticed my Galaxy 2.3 has been making a strange noise when starting when warm too. It can only be described as sounding like Yoda from Star Wars clearing his throat!

I've been told not to worry too much about it; and a lot of 2.3 Galaxys suffer from the weird noise.

I don't know what damage I could be causing by leaving things as they are?

It's a problem with the solenoid. I had the same issue on my golf.

Old grease in the solenoid is stopping the spring from pushing the yoke back on startup

There's 3 screws that holds the soleniod to the motor.

Undo these and remove the plastic cover - you will find the yoke grease/oil has dried up.

Use brake cleaner to clean out then regrease/oil the yoke

This will fix it..........work perfect for me now.

Thanks for that.

I'll give it a go later!
