boko Posted October 16, 2009 Report Posted October 16, 2009 my 1999 2.8 gal has started to use a lot ot petrol in the last week and also there is some soot and i think water coming out of the exhaust when it is started . looked at the o2 sensor and there is a rattel inside is this right Quote
sepulchrave Posted October 16, 2009 Report Posted October 16, 2009 These things will affect your fuel consumption the most (in approximate order of importance): 1. Engine temperature sensor2. Lambda sensor (O2 sensor)3. Coil pack4. Plug leads5. Spark Plugs6. MAF7. Air filter (a very distant last) The rattling may be the heat shield on the Cat so don't take that as an indicator of whether the Lambda probe is working or not. Try disconnecting your battery to reset the ECU and see if it improves at all. Binding brakes will really badly affect fuel consumption, but wouldn't make the exhaust sooty. Quote
boko Posted October 16, 2009 Author Report Posted October 16, 2009 thanks for the fast answer, coil has been changed , the o2 sensor is only 6 weeks old but the rattle is coming from the inside ,have now fitted the old ome back on and there is a small inprovment but i have not reset the ems yet. I've got a 2.8 4x4, it is thirsty but didn't expect anything else, I get 15mpg around town and never got more than 27mpg ever! lol Mike Quote
boko Posted October 16, 2009 Author Report Posted October 16, 2009 was geting 22/24 around town but in the last week it had droped to 15/17 mph Quote
ForeverFord Posted October 16, 2009 Report Posted October 16, 2009 The rattle sound could be from the Catalytic Converter (Honeycombe breaking up inside) if you or someone can pin-point where it is coming from, also the the extra fuel enrichment could be the exhaust blocking up the gas flow, so you will need to find the main cause of the fault and recifie it - i.e. fault code reader. Hope this helps. Quote
luxtonm Posted October 16, 2009 Report Posted October 16, 2009 was geting 22/24 around town but in the last week it had droped to 15/17 mph Hi, It could be as simple as a brake binding etc, also the air temp has changed recently and it will take longer to warm up. I noticed your from the east mids, I'm in Coalvile and got a full version of VAG-COM, your more than welcome to meet up and check the engine management out Mike Quote
