hi i have a ford galaxy 1998 2.3 dohc ghia and i have a problem.

The secondary air pump keeps staying on when the ignition is off, every time i turn the car off it stays on and i have to disconnect it just incase it flattens the battery.

Before i start the car i have to reconnect it and as soon as its plugged in it turns on again, even when the ignition is off and no keys are are in.

I think it might be a sticky relay but i dont know where it is or which one it is.

As anyone had this problem or does anyone know how to fix it?

Please help!

Thanks

I think they are supposed to come on/stay on when you switch on and off , mine certainly does. I think you should be asking for how long ? mine will stay on for a few minutes and then switch off, the aim of this pump i believe is to circulate the water through the head to prevent so called hot spots , although mine never worked for 2 yrs untill i fixed it ? This is just my understanding of it mind, i'm sure someone with more knowledge will be along to help

Ok forget everything i said, just reread the post and your asking about a secondary air pump not the bloody coolant pump (which does this) DOH! mental note to myself don't type and talk on the phone at the same time.

The relay is located in the battery junction box and is marked K123 on the wiring diagram:

hi, thanks for the advice il give it a go tomorrow. I left the pump connected today and it was on for atleat 20 mins until i decidedto disconect it for the fear of a drained battery.

sorry about the other thread i put it in there by mistake.

Would it be dangerous or would it damage my car if i left the secondary air pump disconnected until i repair it?

Disconnecting it shouldn't cause any damage. It's there to reduce engine emissions while the engine is cold and should be switched off by the ECU within a couple of minutes once the lambda sensor has reached its working temperature. (Air is injected into the exhaust manifold to oxidise any unburnt fuel, reducing emissions and heating the catalytic converter more quickly to its working temperature). The engine warning light might come on to indicate the pump isn't working but that should be all.

The relay is switched by the ECU so the most likely fault is the relay stuck in the closed position. According to the wiring diagram applying 12v across pins 4 and 6 should close the relay across pins 2 and 8. If you have continuity between pins 2 and 8 without applying power then the relay is stuck.
