Hi

As my contribution to this site I've decided to take pics and describe how I changed the engine oil on my 2004 1.9 TDI 130ps Ghia Galaxy.After reading different posts on here i decided on using Ford Sd oil from the Ford Dealer and O.E.M filter.

1st job was to take the cover off the engine under the Bonnet.This just lifts off two grommets and then slides towards you and lift it off.Thats when the Oil filter plastic cap arrangment became a problem and a 36mm Oil Wrench Socket HAD to be bought to remove the cover (too tight to remove with plumbers pliers).I also bought a new Oil Sump Plug because the original one has a copper like washer that crushes (Its a 19mm Hex Head in the middle bottom of pic)

1. 5 litre of oil and filter -

Is the oil to VW505.01 or higher specification? For PD engines this is a must.

 

The oil the OP used is the correct oil for the Galaxy (PD engine) and 505.01 spec.

Remember to check the oil level again after running for a few minutes and letting it drain back down the cylindrers for an hour so. Overnight even. May need topping up a little more to reach the MAX mark on the dipstick.

Yep, the oil pumps work a treat, I can do an oil change without even getting my hands dirty, in less than 20 minutes. Its also great for sucking out the oil from the filter housing etc. The oil container has a measure on the side to show you have removed every last drop. Does not work on the petrol variant though, as the pipe does not reach to the bottom of the sump.

on the older mk1 tdi has anyone used this type of oil remover ?

was wondering if you could get the big fat oil filter of easy as it hangs downwards and looks a bit confined space.

just wondering also about the use of house bricks to support the car !!! sounds a bit dodgy .

I know ideally a good set of ramps would of been the way to go, but the car was totally safe with 3 housebricks widthways under each front wheel.(Rear wheels chocked)

As for the oil remover, I believe its well worth the money and i'll invest in one for next time. :(

Hey Brash - thanks for the posts & info. Its inspiring me to have a go myself. I think I should be able to handle these small jobs however, I'm always scared that I'll take something off and then not have the right tools & bugger it all up! Its great that you list exactly what tools are needed too so that I can ensure I'm prepared. :(

 

BTW, did you follow any books as guidance ? 'Was thinking of investing in a decent one if you (or anyone) has a recommendation ?

 

Also, for all you other contributors / moderators with knowhow etc, a big thanks as your posts are also pushing me to have a go myself - something I've always wanted to do but never had the time or proper encouragement. I've also recently taken to watching Wheeler Dealers on tv (Discovery turbo methinks) and find that quite encouraging too from the technical perspective.

 

BTW, where's the best place to get oil etc ? It can be quite expensive from the likes of Halfords and I'm always a little coy in buying their own brand stuff, even if it is supposed to be ok (according to them) - is it better to buy from a Motor Factor ? Can you get the plugs & washers from them also or are they a Ford dealer visit ?

 

Guess they don't have bricks though ? Prob have to go direct to Ford for them... :(

JD,the oil from halfords is ok,there are a few posts on the subject over the years,and sometimes halfords do a bogoff deal thats the time to buy :( ,make sure you get the correct oil for your car thats the important bit,again read up on the info then you forarmed.

 

i too am a bit like you,bit aprehesive over doing things on the car,but like everything in life give it a go,the more you do the more confidence you gain.

im seriously thinking of getting 1 of the oil extractors,will save a lot of time and effort,

and as i have a service comming up in the next 1k,i think the oil change is the most difficult part.simply to do the filters and you save yourself a few quid.
