I am going to show my ignorance now, here goes: I have a noise when steering too, mostly when stationary/idling, it started yesterday and can be heard as a rumble/knocking when turning the wheel, if it is the same problem as above, how can it be to do with the alternator pulley ? I would have thought it was more like a CV joint or drive shaft something ? Any ideas before I take it to the dreaded garage tomorrow ?

Good old Ford dealer does it again ! Took it in today and asked them to take a look at the Galaxy, only took it there as it was the only garage that could book it in last minute. Went through the process of dropping it off and arranging a lift home etc etc, explained the problem and then left it with them. By 3pm heard nothing, so rang them to ask them if it was diagnosed yet, they said 'nothing wrong with it mate, come and pick it up' !!! even though it sounds like a tractor when turning the wheel, so I asked them when the intended to inform me it was ready, they ignored the comment. Apparently they checked the car without even removing the wheels. They then had the ordasity to ask for a diagnostic fee of

When i rang a ford dealership about my alternater pulley. they went on to tell me that the pulley and alternater comes complete and that you can't seperate them. To which he then went on to try and sell me a alternater

I was told by the grease monkey at Ford when I mentioned about the alternator pulley that it was highly unlikely to be this, so I doubt that they even checked it. They even made out it was to do with non-standard wheels, even though I've had non-standard wheels on for over a year.

If we are talking Bosch alternators here then i take it you mean the dreaded INA pulley which i believe you can get from GSF if i'm not mistaken. If this is indead the issue then i can assure you they do seperate ( Spent the last 18yrs working at the Bosch alternator plant here in Cardiff ) although you may need a spline tool.

It's most likely the pulley and it's very easy to check, in your earlier post you mentioned CV joints or drive shafts these would only knock when moving and turning.

Another thing to check is the shock absorber top bushes which can become corroded and can cause a similar noise. Just jack the front of the car up just enough to get both front wheels off the ground and turn the steering from lock to lock and listen for a grinding sound without the engine running.

Good luck

It was the alternator pulley, had a local garage change it and fit a new one, it solved the problem. BUT whilst changing it they inadvertently knocked out and snapped the vacuum pipe to the vacuum reservoir, didn't notice it until I tried to drive home with no turbo. Took it back and they have fitted a complete replacement vacuum reservoir for free as the connecting pipe is under pressure and needs a firm secure fitting into the top section (VW part now beeen modified by VW with a metal heat shield for some reason). So anyway, problem solved with noisy steering, it was the belt slipping as the wheel turned putting the alternator pulley under pressure. Having looked at the part they took off, it had sheared off. The engine is quieter now too without the tapping noise. Cost more than fitting it and buying the parts myself but jobs done and guaranteed for 12 months. Edited by jkspoff
