lclvjf Posted September 13, 2009 Report Posted September 13, 2009 Hi, please be gentle as am new to all this lol :DMy 98 Sharan died on me whilst driving it today. All of a sudden, power just went off, the dash lights all came on and it wouldn't move.Called Green Flag who did fair few tests, relays, fuses, coils etc and couldn't find anything wrong :DThe engines ticking over but wont start. The mechanic who came out seemed to think might be an electric problem, and said take it to a garage 2moro and get it hooked up for a diagnostic.Couple questions if no1 minds??1. Are these diagnostics expensive?2. Any1 have any idea what it could be based on what have said (if any of it makes sense lol)?3.Do I just cut my losses and scrap it lol? Any help will be fab :) Thanks Lisa :) Quote
jkspoff Posted September 13, 2009 Report Posted September 13, 2009 Hi Lisa, have no fear someone will be along with more knowledge than me soon, and maybe have even experienced the same thing. It does sound electrical to me, immobiliser etc ?? Quote

It does sound electrical to me, immobiliser etc ?? Thank u! Thought would be days til got a reply lol.Have been reading about the relay 30?? I did have a few times were it wouldnt start right away, and Green Flag came out (again!) and mentioned loose relay. So I gave them all a bit of a wiggle and the engine would start again, but this time nothing :)I'm really hoping its nothing major and expensive :D Quote
Mirez Posted September 13, 2009 Report Posted September 13, 2009 I was under the impression relay 30 is on the second bank, so you'll have to remove some trim to get to it - have you done this or just wriggled all the ones you can see? Quote

dipsomaniac Posted September 13, 2009 Report Posted September 13, 2009 i would rule out a relay first as you have had problems with one in the past. if it still doesn't start you will need to read any fault codes. either some kind soul on here with vag-com that lives near you could help or you will need to get an independent garage (from Quote

westie Posted September 15, 2009 Report Posted September 15, 2009 (edited) Is your car a diesel ? It sounds like it could be a relay 109 problem to me.If this relay goes...and they are a known fault, its just like turning the ignition off...loss of all power. When you try to start it, before you spin the engine, does the glow plug light come on ?No glow plug light....relay 109 is the problem.Do you hear the diesel solenoid "click" when you turn the key ? Try putting a wire from the top of the diesel solenoid (under the cover on top the the engine) to the +ve battery terminal. If the car now starts, it points to a dodgy relay 109. I found this on one site...If the engine shuts off suddenly during normal driving and you don't see the glow plug light go on during failed restarts then replace the black relay 109 with the newer gray relay 109 (1996-2003 cars only, under the steering wheel). It sometimes cools and lets you restart. The problem with black relay 109 was bad soldering. This relay controls power to the ECU and prevents the glow plug light from coming on at all during failed restarts. more info here on relay 109 ... http://forums.tdiclub.com/showpost.php?p=1...amp;postcount=2 and here for diesel solenoid (near bottom of page) ....... http://forums.tdiclub.com/showpost.php?p=1...amp;postcount=6 Hope this may help. Good luck. Edited September 15, 2009 by westie Quote

Good luck. HiThanx for this reply! It isn't a diesel, its a petrol, but I did have my doubts about the relays. Is 109 the same as relay 30? Its a 98 Sharan and dont seem to find the 109? My friends brother is out tonight to check it over so am hoping it will get sorted! Where can you buy the relays from? Thanks again Lisa Quote
westie Posted September 15, 2009 Report Posted September 15, 2009 Petrol wont have a relay 109....I think relay 30 is similar ? Mine is a diesel and I had the same problem as you and changing relay 109 fixed the problem.it certainly looks like relay 30 does a similar job In the 2nd reply from mirez, click on the link and follow the steps from step 4 onwards.... you dont need steps 1 - 3 for the Mk 1 Galaxy. Had my friends brother come out yesterday but couldn't find anything wrong. The diagnostic kept saying no communication so couldn't use that either. Have phoned a garage today but they think its an electric problem, so an auto electrician is looking at it tomorrow. Have ordered a new relay 30 (after phoning loads of places and having no luck!!) but seeing as though it costs Quote
gregers Posted September 16, 2009 Report Posted September 16, 2009 just for info there is a very detailed post on connection with vag com in the faqs. Quote

lclvjf Posted September 17, 2009 Author Report Posted September 17, 2009 hi i have a 2.3 petrol relay 30 went on me and i couldn't get one of any one other than fords but rang a auto electrician and he came out and solderd it for a tenner 18 month later its still going thanks 4 ur reply. Ive got an auto electrician coming to have a look this morning so will mention it. I definately think its the relay. Its not clicking (and ive heard from here it should) and when my partner manually pushed the arm the rev counter was going up. Or am I just getting my hopes up lol?? Quote
lclvjf Posted September 18, 2009 Author Report Posted September 18, 2009 thanks to all who replied. Im now back up and running. The problem was relay 167, but seeing as though had ordered a 30 anyway i replaced that too. Still can't believe how hard it was to get hold of the relays though!! And cost Quote
