Becki Posted September 9, 2009 Report Posted September 9, 2009 hello guys another questions please our car has a shudder when you brake that you can hear as well as feel under the steering wheel. also when you take the car on a corner that involve weight going on that wheel it will make a knocking noise . could this brake pads/discs? or are we looking at a more expensive repair? where do we start thank you in advance becki Quote
davethedoor Posted September 9, 2009 Report Posted September 9, 2009 I had this on my Galaxy changd discs /pads and n/s trackrod end 6000 mils ago still ok. Quote
Smilge Posted September 10, 2009 Report Posted September 10, 2009 (edited) Try ARB Drop links as well as Daves suggestions. Not expensive and pretty simple to do ...try a search as I'm sure there's a good post with piccies. Edited September 10, 2009 by Bleeno Quote
mikej Posted September 10, 2009 Report Posted September 10, 2009 In my opinion this sounds very much like a trackrod end, i had an issue with mine not so long ago, you could really feel it in the steering and hear it when braking... Quote
Becki Posted September 10, 2009 Author Report Posted September 10, 2009 In my opinion this sounds very much like a trackrod end, i had an issue with mine not so long ago, you could really feel it in the steering and hear it when braking... is there a way of checking a track rod end? we have just been for a some discs and pads and boy is it a lot worse now! it is clunking all the time now and not just on braking or cornering. we have had a pull on the track rod ends and they move at the bottm on both but unsur eif this is normal or not. thank you again. becki ps also when pulling off it clunks too. mikej Posted September 10, 2009 Report Posted September 10, 2009 (edited) If you can, raise both front wheels off the ground at the same time and have someone sit in the car and turn the wheel to full lock, engine off mind, when on full lock have someone grab the tyre at 6 O'ClocK and try and rock back and forth, then do the same at quater past 3 if there is any movement you should see/feel it in the joint. mikej Posted September 10, 2009 Report Posted September 10, 2009 Just a thought it's not the roll restrictor thats shot is it, this is the large engine stabiliser mount on the rear of the engine? you can check this by putting the car into gear while the handbrake is on and while someone watches the engine for excessive movement back and forth you use to clutch to rock the engine. May even be visible from below the vehicle when doing this although very difficult to diagnose without seeing it for yourself ! Quote
Bigjeeze Posted September 10, 2009 Report Posted September 10, 2009 Just a thought - if it is track rod ends I bought a set of QH for Quote
Becki Posted September 11, 2009 Author Report Posted September 11, 2009 right guys started to do car today only to find out that what was up with the car was quite scarey! all 5 wheel nuts were very loose.1 we had a new tyre put on 1 week ago on that side and it had got worse since then so they obviously didnt tighten the nuts as they shud! car has had new discs and pads anyway as they were getting low thank you guys for all your suggestions car seems to be ok now update after tomorrows drive to lichfield Quote
mikej Posted September 11, 2009 Report Posted September 11, 2009 (edited) Bloody hell your lucky, you should return to the garage that fitted the tyre and tell them although i wouldn't expect anything of it but it may save some other sole from loosing a wheel. Anyhow at least your up and running now ! Edited September 11, 2009 by mikej Quote
davethedoor Posted September 11, 2009 Report Posted September 11, 2009 I think nobody mentioned the wheel nuts becuse I would thought you would have checked them first. Glad you got it sorted. Quote

Same old story, you take your car to these so called experts who either try to tighten/remove the nuts with a handbrace and give up after a few seconds then resort to using a air compressor wrench to tighten/remove the nuts instead of using the proper tools i.e A torque wrench.Personal experience - i carry a small but adequate torque wrench in the car next to the jack and insist that if they don't have the correct tools for the job then use mine and tighten the wheels to the correct settings (then check again a few days later). I shudder to think what would have happened had you been travelling with a full load and the wheel came off. Quote
