Electric Water Pump

The electric water pump situated at the back of the engine bay at the top (in the attachment) on my Y reg 2.3 is, after 96,000 miles, now making the most horrendous bearing noise which is obviously most noticible when the pump runs on for a few mins after the engine's turned off. Ford want

Hi , i have the same model /year galaxy . My understanding is that the pump is there to keep the water circulating once the engine is turned off to possibly prevent hot spots in the head, mine runs as soon as i turned the key and again for a short while after i turn it off, it didn't work for over a year due to the brushes being worn out ( very common ) this caused no issues at all for me or at least none that i know of, i eventually repaired it using some Bosch power drill brushes of similar dimension which cost me approx Edited September 4, 2009 by mikej

Thanks. I did a search and couldn't find any refs. What is this pump "called"?

 

(The noise doesn't sound like brushes to me - quite deep and a repetative "knocking/bearing" type noise. But of course you could indeed be correct!)

Try looking in the FAQs at No 54, you can also do a search on "after run pump". You may have a bearing problem but I think that when the brushes start to fail the pump makes strange noises. They appear, from other reports, to fail at about 90K, I think mines about to fail at 70K.

Thanks FAQ 19 also seems to cover it. With a Bosch part that should be

yep done the repair as the faq suggests a few months back,not that hard and saves you quite a few quid.
