rich235 Posted September 4, 2009 Report Posted September 4, 2009 Hi, I've just purchased a Ford Galaxy on a private sale. I test drove the car and everything seems fine, except the gear stick seemed to have alot of play. As the car has done 90,000, I thought this would be quite normal. But after driving home, I can no longer select 1st or reverse! I took it to my local garage and he said it could be either the cables or selector, but had never known trouble selecting 1st or reverse?????The only thing he noticed was the plate on top that the cables go in seemed very worn????? Has anyone had a problem like this or have I purchased an expensive nightmare!!!!! Thanks in advance. Rich Quote
gregers Posted September 4, 2009 Report Posted September 4, 2009 do a search on here there are numerous posts on gearbox/selector problems etc,1 of them may be what your car is suffering from. Quote
rich235 Posted September 5, 2009 Author Report Posted September 5, 2009 do a search on here there are numerous posts on gearbox/selector problems etc,1 of them may be what your car is suffering from. I've just scanned through a few threads, but none of those seem to have a similar problem to my car..... The main noticable problem is that the plate on the gear box, where the cables mount to the gear box moves about as if it's lose.I've checked the bolt and it's tight! Is there something like a spline that the plate locates on that has sheared off? Or does it sit on a spacer or something that has perrished through wear? ThanksRich Quote
Saif Rehman Posted September 5, 2009 Report Posted September 5, 2009 My brother when he had a Mk1 had very similar problems i.e. selecting any gear. Turned out to be the linkages from the gear lever to the gearbox - it was rectified with new linkages but unfortunately meant the carpet and padding (and seats) had to be removed from the front of the car to get to under the gear lever.
