Bigjeeze Posted September 3, 2009 Report Posted September 3, 2009 I am considering replacing all the joints and bushes etc on the front of my MK2 - It's just hit 150K and whilst it still seems to sail through the mot I think I would like to tighten up a few bits. I have bought new Track rod ends and new bottom swivels joints, new arb bushes etc. But in looking at the wishbone bushes I am wondering if anyone has pressed out the old and pressed in new. I have a set of new rear bushes - but before I strip it all down I want to know if there are particular hazards or problems. I had this on the MK1 and just bought new wishbones but I think that this time ill do it properly. I don't have a press but do have a rather large vice ( ) Any suggestions? BJ Quote
sepulchrave Posted September 3, 2009 Report Posted September 3, 2009 Yes, get a press. Its a swine of a job to get 'em to go in and you have to accurately align them with a mark on the bottom arm. I got my local blacksmith to do it for me with his flypress for a drink. It was money well spent! Quote
supersiecosse Posted July 3, 2010 Report Posted July 3, 2010 And the bolts locating the rear bushes/wishbones to the rear subframe are a complete swine to undo. I would suggest splitting the nuts rather than wrestle with a 21mm socket and rachet along with a 21mm ring spanner. And obtaining four new bolts and nuts for re-fitting. Good luck. Oh and i have read elsewhere that if the rear bushes have been worn for sometime then damage is done to the mounting points for these on the rear-subframe. Caused by the bolts which retain the wishbones rounding and oversizing the original holes. New rear-subframe required if this is the case I believe. Quote

BJthe rear bush is alloy and easy to cut out with a blade or hammer out then lightly tap new one in they bend easy, but who's gonna see it so it doesnt have to be a work of art.For the front bush they pull out with a large socket small washer and a nut and bolt. On the v6 engine you need to either undo engine mount's or take of sump for drivers side arm. Quote
Jayton Posted July 3, 2010 Report Posted July 3, 2010 Put the new bush in the freezer over night and only take it out when you are ready to put it in, it should go in easier  Quote
