1999 1.9tdi 39k miles. Glow plug has started flashing while driving, user guide suggests it may be engine management system fault. How serious is this and can I still drive the car ? Any ideas welcomed.

I had this on my Alhambra. I thought it may be serious and my local dealer suggested I take out a warranty before sending it in for its 60,000 service. Glad I did as about

Has the inlet air mass flow meter been checked.

Someone I know had a similar problem of low power and it turned out to be the mass flow meter. Unfortunately not a cheap item though.

Forgot to mention I had the MAF changed but no effect on the power :(

My brother in law (an ex-VW mechanic) saw similar symptoms on a Sharan which turned out to be a notch out on the timing for the lift pump.

It's back in the garage next week for a needle lift sensor (whatever that is) but also to look at the power issue.

From this group, the other two likely candidates are the EGR valve and some breathing restriction, tar or blocked exhaust / CAT. Will post when this is solved.

had similar problem on my 110 tdi, it flashed on & off for a couple of months, then one morning would'nt start at all. Had to be towed to nearest Ford garage for engine management to be reprogrammed. Had a warranty from allen ford, but they said it was'nt covered. cost 2 hours labour (approx 140)
