Ok. Loads of this here but all differ in symptoms.

Every time wife pulled up the drive the fans were on for a few minutes. Temp was at normal 90. Coolant was fine. So I guessed it was temerature tranmiter switch. Or what ever its called nowadays.

Today we was on the motorway for 15 mins and BEEP BEEP temp was nearly at the red. I pulled over and could see anything wrong. Waited 2 mins and all was back to 90deg again. Was the thermostat sticking hmmmm.

I tried to get it to over head in the drive and it took me 15 mins to get it to normal temp. Took it for a trash. Came back fans were on. The top hose was quite hot but the bottom was only warm with not much pressure in at all.

Now there is a hose which leads to the front of the engine block. Don't know what it is. Looks like a thermostat housing but thats at the normal near side cylinder head...isnt it. Anyway. That was hot at the block and 6 inch lower it was cold. So i took it off and nothing came out of the block end, only the rad end.

Also when I took the expansion cap off it didn't hiss much. Put my finger in and I wouldn't say it was red hot.

I am getting a rad (expansion)cap and thermostat tomorrow, so ill give it a go. Hope to GOD the pump is ok. It will run all day at normal temp. Normaly when pumps go they get hot QUICK

I assume this is a TDI, if so it's very likely to be the water pump from the symptoms you describe.

Tried thermostat and the lower pipes are warm but not hot. Normaly when the water pumps go on cars they overheat rapidly...not these

Not quite sure what you were saying in your last post and not sure what model you have but mine is a 52 115 TDI and when the pump went it would tick over all day without overheating and was quite happy around town and on the motorway up to about 55/60 but above that and on long hills it would overheat.

Fans coming on after switching off - I had that on my old 110 unit and that was the temperature sender which is a 2 part thingy but the temperature gauge bit was OK and it neither overheted or indicated hotter than normal although it did stop the glow plugs coming on - only noticable in the winter.

Hpe this helps.
