ALARM MAN Posted June 11, 2004 Report Posted June 11, 2004 METALMICKEY Hey up bud you sorted yet ? Ian Quote
Guest metalmickey Posted June 11, 2004 Report Posted June 11, 2004 Hi Ian Fitted it all on Saturday. DVD Player was pretty easy really, just a bit of wiring and all the required feeds can be spliced off the Ford stereo. Placed the fm modulator under the dash more or less above the clutch pedal (there is a wiring harness under there and I secured the unit to that). Screen was the bit I was nervous about. As it happens I needn't have worried, as per your advice it was pretty easy really, mind I was a little concerned as I was drilling into the roof. Anyway, I used 4mm rivets to secure the mounting plate to the roof, the front is secured through the roof support, as you stated there isn't any metal or bracing to secure the rear of the plate to so I did as you did and simply secured it to the headlining using 4 rivets and washers to stop the rivets pulling through. It worked really well and the unit feels pretty well mounted. So that was the fitting done. Unfortunately testing wasn't quite so good. The DVD player plays originals faultlessly, but it didn't like my DVD-Rs very much and wouldn't touch DVD+Rs at all and of course my laptop only does DVD+R. To most this probably wouldn't be a problem but I just cannot afford to leave originals in the car. Second problem is that with the engine running there is a dull whine through the speakers dependant on engine speed, not really that loud but I really suffer high pitch sounds. Last problem is the screen clasp, it has quite a lot of free play in it; driving down the road with screen up is fine first thing in the morning but as I drive home from work when the interior has been blisteringly hot all day and the clasp just wont hold the screen up and it's forever dropping down. I must admit that I have now bought a replacement DVD player from the local in-car audio centre which has cured the DVD+-R issue and also the whine. I will take the screen down on Saturday and see if I can do something with the clasp. In fairness, the DVD player was very good in terms of quality and ability to play original discs even over the worst road surfaces, and I'm sure an additional choke fitted to the player would have fixed the whine. The screen is absolutely first class (or will be once I've got the clasp working), it displays colours extremely well, is nice and bright and is pretty fast too. Anyway Ian, thanks for all of the advice re fitting etc, I really would never have even tried to fit a roof mounted screen without your help, very much appreciated. Anyway, I'm off to get my tools ready for tomorrow and the screen clasp, now where did I leave that hammer? :D Quote
ALARM MAN Posted June 14, 2004 Report Posted June 14, 2004 Glad to hear it all went well apart fom a couple of issuesWe have no dvd-r problems no recorder so that works ok for usyes the clasp is the onlY week point i would say out of the pack Why not try a tiny patch of velcro may do the job Oh and by the way well done. I have just fitted the same to a Kia Sedona for a customer highly delighted he is Regards IAN Quote
Guest metalmickey Posted June 14, 2004 Report Posted June 14, 2004 Well it's fixed, the clasp that is. Was out in it over the weekend and it was great, the kids were so quiet I thought we had forgotten them. Was a bit concerned that it would induce travel sickness but they were all fine (and we travelled over some pretty twisty hilly roads). On the down side the wife said it would be nice if she had a screen up front for her to watch, guess I'll be getting the credit card out again <_< Quote
Guest nimrod Posted June 14, 2004 Report Posted June 14, 2004 heres one for the Mrs http://www.tgincar.co.uk/sun5.jpg should keep her happy <_< and keep the screen out of your way, so no distraction! http://www.tgincar.co.uk/ Quote
Taliska Posted August 25, 2004 Author Report Posted August 25, 2004 Well... in the end it was a slightly unorthodox solution, but was cheap and very effective. Trip to Spain with two small kids went very smoothly in the car! Quote
Taliska Posted August 25, 2004 Author Report Posted August 25, 2004 And this is how it was powered... via an inverter (12VDC -> 240VAC) Quote
Taliska Posted August 25, 2004 Author Report Posted August 25, 2004 Downsides... The inverter kept overheating and cutting out, hence its position resting on the cup holders with the aircon blowing over it to keep it cool. (Halfords inverter with no fan in the box - will be going back!) Scratched air vent bezel from the invertor rubbing on the trim - blast! Lots of wires hanging around, so only tolerable on longer journeys. Upsides... Cheap. Big screen. Also used a funny cassette adapter to plumb the audio into the car stereo. Taliska Quote
Guest fredt Posted August 25, 2004 Report Posted August 25, 2004 Lots of wires hanging around, so only tolerable on longer journeys. thats why we got the roof mount system! the one we had before was an in the bag system, which had leads running all over the place! The inverter kept overheating and cutting out, hence it's position resting on the cup holders with the aircon blowing over it to keep it cool. could you not have stuck it on the floor in front of the rear foot well vent behind the hand brake? or in the boot in front of the vents there? would have saved your dash trim and meant you could have used the cup holders and have cool air blasting over you instead of warm air from the invertor :D Quote
Taliska Posted August 26, 2004 Author Report Posted August 26, 2004 Re: Sticking the inverter in the rear... Trouble is that the inverter only comes with a short 12V lead (to reduce voltage drop) and it wouldn't reach the rear! Damage to dash trim was only discovered afterwards! And there's not that much warm air coming off to notice any difference! :D Taliska Quote
Richmond Posted August 26, 2004 Report Posted August 26, 2004 I also used a laptop with an inverter to play DVDs on the move. The inverter plugged into the cig lighter in the boot, no problems with overheating (it came from Maplins). The kids were wholly unimpressed, possibly because we insisted that they used headphones, and the power output of the laptop is only barely adequate to drive to headphones audibly. Also, one of them is not a great traveller, and watching made him feel worse. For long trips, I'm a big fan of story tapes. If you pick the right ones, everyone can enjoy them. Only useful if there's no cricket on the radio, obviously. Quote
Guest fredt Posted August 26, 2004 Report Posted August 26, 2004 if there's no cricket on the radio, obviously. Cricket's on the radio? that chirping noise may be because the suppressor if breaking down? I would get that seen to <_< Quote
corskey Posted August 30, 2004 Report Posted August 30, 2004 My post fitted DVD player ( a Coleman F04 ??)finally gave up the ghost today :D B) :D B) and I am looking to replace it. The Innovatek FD-5 from MP3playerstore looks a reasonable replacement but I'm woried about what it can play. Has anyone else had a problem with the Innovatek FD5 playing DVD-Rs or DVD+Rs. I rarely leave originals in the car. BTW Metalmickey, what model did you buy in the end and how much did it cost. Also, how would I connect the FM modulator up - The audio outputs fron the Innovatek would be connected to the LCD screen using the RCA cable. how would the signal get to the modulator - I see only an input for audio. Does that mean I need a splitter? :) Cheers Corskey Quote
corskey Posted August 30, 2004 Report Posted August 30, 2004 I've just e-mailed mp3playerstore.com and they confirm that the FD-5 can play my copies, so it looks as though the end of 'I spy' is in sight. Quote
ALARM MAN Posted August 31, 2004 Report Posted August 31, 2004 we have no problems with the FD5 apart from a hick up or twoThe modulator fits in the audio out then you tune radio to suit Bingo Ian Quote
corskey Posted August 31, 2004 Report Posted August 31, 2004 sorry to be an idiot here, but where does the (single) audio output from the DVD player go - to the roof mounted screen, or to the modulator. I would like both possibilities as I had before my current plaver went belly up. Do I need some type of splitter to allow the output to go to both screen and modulator Also Alarm-man, you say we have no problems........... Does this mean that you fit these as a business, and if so, where are you based. Can U PM me if you do this. Corskey Quote
Guest Jessam Posted September 6, 2004 Report Posted September 6, 2004 First post.Bought two 7 inch screens with headrest mounts from www.tgincar.co.uk and a Plustron DVD player from Sainsburys (12 volt into outlet) total cost Quote

Dally Posted September 7, 2004 Report Posted September 7, 2004 Have been using it in an Omega but now that I've got the Galaxy I will have them fitted into the headrests, could be a problem with donuts though. Donuts should not be a problem. I had 6.5inch screens fitted in mine. It will cost a little more though. Several ICE outlets in the East Midlands area were willing to do them. Quote
Guest mel_kenyon Posted September 9, 2004 Report Posted September 9, 2004 :o For any one considering buying from the states - I bought a DVD player and screen from mp3playerstore.com and at first only the screen arrived and mp3playerstore needed some convincing that the player had not arrived, then they sent it but only after some time; unfortunately it packed up after 30 minutes and now they won't answer my emails. I have had to place the matter in dispute with my credit card issuer and DHL have just sent me an email for the import duties/VAT on the player. I am not sure if these are recoverable from mp3playerstore  I may just have been unlucky but beware!! Quote
ALARM MAN Posted September 9, 2004 Report Posted September 9, 2004 Sorry to hear about your problems i have had no problems with my orders but there is always a first ian Quote
Richmond Posted September 10, 2004 Report Posted September 10, 2004 DHL have just sent me an email for the import duties/VAT on the player. I am not sure if these are recoverable from mp3playerstore  I may just have been unlucky but beware!! Internet advertised prices are usually either for the supplier's home market or exclusive of any taxes; they will not include UK taxes (unless the supplier is in UK). If you buy something mail/internet order from outside UK you can expect to pay import duties and VAT (depending on the goods, you may pay less if the supplier is within the EU). On US websites, I think prices usually include state taxes, even though these vary from state to state, but will not include UK taxes. Quote
