Anybody managed to fit a DVD player into a Galaxy themselves?

How much would one cost - I've not got a clue!

Thanks,

I'm in the process of doing this at the moment.

Some points that may interest you:-

1) Ford (Visteon unit) is not multi region

2) I purchased centre console to fit my own but found that the aperture in not standard din - the visteon unit is very small and there is no way a din will fit.

3) There was no loom under the carpet, all connections have to be made afresh - this will include ground, permanent live and ignition live. If the unit you fit has integrated illumination, then a further cable will be required.

4) I cannot fit a flip down roof monitor due to dual air con vents - they fall bang in the middle of where a monitor may go.

5) Headrest screens are my only option. I have open air - this means A seven inch monitor may not fit - I'm probably gonna go for 6.5 inch.

6) If you want a set up like the factory fit eg playstation on 1 screen and dvd on the other, then you will need a switching unit.

7) All companies in the East midlands are quoting approx

You'd do better to scan the Argos catalogue and/or visit a few discount electrical places. For just in-car DVD, you can get a portable set-up that hangs over the back of the front seats for a couple of hundred quid each, with 4 or 5 inch LCD TV screens. These can then be removed for security, and used in the house (kids have one each in their bedrooms perhaps?) I'm sure with the approrriate wires and a suitable switching box you could have DVD and video in the car this way, with the option of adding a playstation or whatever expensive toys you feel like adding at a later day, all for much less money than you are looking to spend at present.

I have one of these systems, a 12v VHS player in a bag and a head rest mounted screen, the problem with most of these systems is the amount of cables strung over the place that are needed! power leads, signal leads, head phones etc or in the case of the all in one systems is mounting it so that all the rear passengers can see the screen due to its size!

the all in one bag sytem is now relegeted to the top of the wardrobe, now I have roofmounted screen and overcome all the afore mentioned problems :(

its not just kids that its handy for! last night on a lads night out! an adult film was played :o and there was no one in the back asking are we there yet? it was more a case of do I have to be dropped off first cant I be last? :D

I agree with some of the sentiments expressed. I don't have that kind of money lying around either nor do I intend spending that much but I was indicating what I had been quoted by nearly all ICE outlets (some even said

There is a kit available that fits inbetween the seats like the factory fit unit, this unit contains a dvd player, a fold away screen, aux inputs for the games console etc, I did have a leaflet on it when I first investigated getting a dvd system, I will see if I still have the leaflet stashed and post the details

Hi all,

Thanks for the input everyone - even from those that are against it!

2K is well out of my budget too!

I did wonder if it would make the kids motion sick - was thinking of borrowing a laptop from work with a DVD and seeing if I got a positive reaction from them...

It's just that we're considering driving down to Spain in the summer and, whilst the kids are pretty good travellers, they might find the 1000+ mile journey a tad long and anything that might help to ease the pain would be welcome.

I'd wondered about a small unit wedged in between the front seats too...

This is the floor mounted unit I mentioned, its made by Visteon and IIRC is/was availble for the Espace, Voyager and Galaxy

The link to any supplier of the kit you've indicated would be useful.

On first sight it does look good but I'm dubious if it will fit in a galaxy. I just can't see that whopper of a console fitting in between the front seats whilst still allowing use of the handbrake and the centre armrests.

I may, of course, be proven wrong.

as I said it was/is made to fit in the Espace, Voyager and I was told by the guy in the shop that they had fitted two of them in Galaxy's!

tomorrow if I get back in time I'l stop by the shop and see if they still have the info sheet on the unit available

as for it fitting inbetween the seats I think its a bit like the OE Ford unit where you lose the ability to swivel the seats :o but you do gain a couple of drinks holders and another storage bin :)

Talisker, I did what you're intending to do and used a lap top to road test the DVD player idea. Although my kids (10 years old) enjoy watching films at home, they did not enjoy doing so in the car. My son soon felt sick (he sometimes does anyway) and my daughter, who will watch the test card at home, lost interest after 20 mins or so.

I find story tapes or CDs good news for long journeys. We scratched the surface (not literally, I'm pleased to say) of 'His dark materials' on the way to Tignes last month, making 700 motorway miles tolerable. We've had 'The Lord of the Rings' (not my idea of fun, but OK), 'The Hobbit', 'The Chronicles of Narnia' (good stuff), various H.Potter (OK the first three times, but the novelty wears off), 'This sceptered isle' (OK in short bursts), to name but a few. Even the ones I don't particularly like are better then nothing, interspersed with a bit of music and chat.

Portable DVD has to be a better bet in a car than permanent, surely; you can use it when you get where you're going (or at home) and theft risk is reduced. Mind you, Nimrod's Visteon effort looks very neat.
