Brendon Posted August 5, 2009 Report Posted August 5, 2009 I recently purchase a 2001 Galaxy and it's only used for weekends but the battery has gone flat twice within two weeks. To help could anyone answer the following questions: 1. The display in the cluster never goes off, I am sure when I purchase the vehicle the cluster display would switch off after 10 or 30 minutes. Could any one confirm does the display remain on constantly or should switch off after a period of time. 2. Mounted in the engine there what looks like a motor with two black hoses one runs into the back of the dash and the other hose into & under the engine. This component is mounted mid way in the engine bay just under the windscreen. I have heard this motor running constantly even when the engine has been switched off even after for several hours. Could any one help me understand what is this part? Many thanks for your help & answers in advanced. Quote
mikej Posted August 5, 2009 Report Posted August 5, 2009 (edited) Hi the dash display on my galaxy has done this from day one almost 4 years now and the motor you describe is a pump designed to circulate cooled water around the engine to avoid hot spots ( basically to assist the cooling down of the engine ) once the engine has been switched off this will continue to pump the cooler water for quite a while and the noise has confused all of us at first, beware these have been known to fail around the 60k mark but can be repaired for around a tenner so don't go out and pay Fords a Edited August 5, 2009 by mikej Quote
Mirez Posted August 5, 2009 Report Posted August 5, 2009 Depends what part of the display you are refering? The red LED part in the middle should go off with the ignition, the LCD odometer varies by year and cluster type but LCD's use such a piffling amount of current it could stay on for years without causing a problem. The afterrun pump sounds very much like your problem, it should run continuously when the engine is running and stay on after switch off for around 1min 30. (Again time varies by year and build). It has two functions, one to pump coolant to the back of the car for the rear heater and aux heater and two, to prevent hot spots forming after the engine is switched off.If it stays on for longer then 5 minutes you have a problem and the cause of your flat battery as that pump will draw quite a current. Its nothing more then a pump though so its the pumps controller thats at fauly - There are some threads on here relating to it sticking on so have a read of them. Quote
gregers Posted August 5, 2009 Report Posted August 5, 2009 if you can hear the pump running then at least you wont have to have it repaired, but remember if you do there are intructions in the faqs on how to repair it yourself. Quote
