Hi everyone

Just joined and never used any forums before so please bear with me.

I really am very desperate. I bought a 2000(W) 2.8 V6 galaxy auto about 4 months ago (milage now about 88,000). All was fine (apart from petrol consumption but I expected that) up unitl a week or so ago. Initially, there was a little difficulty in starting the engine in park. I relaised that it might start in neutral and often I took the key out the iginition and started over. Didn't think much about it until the other day.

Driving home at no more than about 30 mph the engine just failed. No bangs, crashes or anything dramatic it just appeared to run out of fuel.

A friendly mechanic at the local Land Rover dealer that I know thought it might be a number of things including the timing chain. I've had another chap have a look at it today and he also thinks it could be that. (He's an ex-Ford technician and appeared to have the diagnostic software on his lap top)

He also mentioned that he felt there was little or no compression. He's not charged me much to tell me this but tells me that to have it taken in to a dealer would be around

Unless your chap can back his "feelings" with actual compression readings, I would ignore that and eliminate the obvious things first.

1. Check the ignition system is working - coil pack etc

2. Check the fuel pump is working and delivering fuel.

Crank Position Sensor is the most likely candidate for this dead stop.

Edit: The mechanic sounds like a chancer to me, I just bet the compression is fine.

The timing chain makes a ghastly racket for ages before it goes bang, so I doubt it's that.

I bought my CPS from my local factors, it was an intermotor part and cost about

Great advice - thanks - Faced with the alternatives it could be worth it - Thanks again

Hi

I had a 1996 2.0 glx that did the very same thing. Turned out the chain had snapped. No warning noises or anything. Just wham!

Hope this isnt the case with yours.
