Bigjeeze Posted August 4, 2009 Report Posted August 4, 2009 Dear all My 1997 Tdi won't start. It is not even cranking - I have checked all the cables battery etc but to no avail. Ignition lights etc all come on Glow plug lights up and goes out etc - All Gauges work If I turn on lights heated screens etc it has no effect either way . Is there a relay or Fuse anywhere in the loop I need to check? Any suggestions? Cheers BJ Quote
seatkid Posted August 4, 2009 Report Posted August 4, 2009 (edited) Any suggestions? Get a large hammer.......... And whack the starter motor (unless its an automatic then check the inhibitor switch) Edited August 4, 2009 by seatkid Quote
Bigjeeze Posted August 4, 2009 Author Report Posted August 4, 2009 Well Three large hammers later - nothing (it's not an Auto) Where should I start looking - I put a direct current from the battery to the solenoid - nothing - not even a click - Does that mean the solenoid is knackered? I am out all day tomorrow and My Missus now has no car - I need help!!! Quote
big_kev Posted August 4, 2009 Report Posted August 4, 2009 Does that mean the solenoid is knackered? Probably, but it could still be the bendix gear giving the flywheel a big hug. See if you can get a 12v feed direct to the motor....just to be sure. I am out all day tomorrow and My Missus now has no car - I need help!!! Its probably a good surgeon ( that can count up to 2 ) with a needle and some thread that you may require. Quote
Bigjeeze Posted August 4, 2009 Author Report Posted August 4, 2009 Well despite hammers and standby surgeons it still isn't going. ;) I'll remove the starter tomorrow evening and see where I go from there. Any advice will be gratefully received!! Quote
big_kev Posted August 5, 2009 Report Posted August 5, 2009 I'll remove the starter tomorrow evening If you're having the starter can I have the Booster Heater and the Compressor... :) Quote
Bigjeeze Posted August 6, 2009 Author Report Posted August 6, 2009 Tried 12v direct to the starter - no good. I'll take it out and see what then - The main problem is it is raining and the grounds wet! Quote
Bigjeeze Posted August 7, 2009 Author Report Posted August 7, 2009 Well removed the starter - tried applying current - nothing. Took the end plate off and two of the four brushes had disintegrated - so I think I'll buy a new one :D The cars done 142K and the starter has never been off so it's not bad really. Who would you reccomend - GSF? Quote
seatkid Posted August 7, 2009 Report Posted August 7, 2009 Maybe you hit it too hard with that hammer... :D Quote
Scorpiorefugee Posted August 8, 2009 Report Posted August 8, 2009 Up to the point where you said the brushes had disintegrated I was going to suggest looking for a piece of copper braid about 2" long which connects the feed from the the input connection into the bowels of the starter. Mine just dissappeared one day and I repaired it with a several pieces of coax cable braid and a large hot soldering iron. I only knew that it had once existed by looking very closely at the connections. But if the brushes are gone......... :D Quote
Bigjeeze Posted August 8, 2009 Author Report Posted August 8, 2009 Bought an exchange starter from GSF Quote
