Guest gmathews Posted March 26, 2004 Report Posted March 26, 2004 Towards the end of last year I purchased a 1996 galaxy 2.8 V6. I knew the rear speaker (passanger door behind driver) wasn't working but assumed this would be a straight forward job for the local ford dealer. Well they told me it is not the speaker but something at the back of the head unit (2007) itself. My question is, would replacing the head unit with another 2007 solve the problem or is it more likely to be the amp? Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted March 26, 2004 Report Posted March 26, 2004 Depends, could be either. Is the front-to-rear fader on the head unit itself? If so, it could be the head unit (2007). If not, and you have a separate front-rear fader then it could be the amp, the fader unit or the speaker. Or it could be the wiring between head unit and amp, or between amp and speaker (cable broken in door loom???) Quote
Guest gmathews Posted March 26, 2004 Report Posted March 26, 2004 the fader is on the head unit as the balance is. It is just the one speaker that is not working out of the eight which made me think it was the speaker end/wiring but the ford dealer said thats not the case. I noticed that when opening the front doors the speakers on the front doors cut out, is this what should happen? is the same meant to happen on the rear passenger doors, ie could a switch/sensor not be working to turn the speaker back on? As you can probably gather I am not technically minded when it comes to incar stereos. Thanks Quote
Guest nimrod Posted March 27, 2004 Report Posted March 27, 2004 No switches on the doors to kill the noise when it's opened! could be the old favorite of the wires in the flexy boot playing up again? it may be worth your while checking the continuity of the speaker wires to the doors? pull the radio out and stick a meter across the speaker wires to check the looms ok? if they are then it may be time to replace the head unit! are you sure you have an amp? pull out the storage bin under the radio and take a look, it should be mounted on top of the transmission tunnel? if you do have one and its playing up it may be an idea to get a decent head unit that will run without the amp and bypass it with a set of leads designed for the job so you dont have to cut 'n' shut the wires to suit! Ivor_E_Tower Posted March 27, 2004 Report Posted March 27, 2004 OK you have 8 speakers and just one doesn't work. Where are the other 7? If there are two in the rearmost seat areas, ie 2 behind the rear doors, and they work, then they will also be from the rear speaker output from the head unit and/or amp, which means that EITHER the speaker is U/S and the dealer has mis-diagnosed the problem, OR (and my money is on this) the wires to the rear passenger door speaker are broken. Do you have another speaker that you can substitute for the "dead" one? You've already got one speaker cutting out when you open a door -and that points to broken wires being present. Quote
Guest nimrod Posted March 27, 2004 Report Posted March 27, 2004 It could be a case of when gmathews says eight speakers he's counting the two tweeters on the dash and then the the four door speakers? did the early 96 models have the rear most speakers? mine doesnt! and it had the 2007 head unit but was ampless Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted March 27, 2004 Report Posted March 27, 2004 Yes, but if my maths is correct, 2 tweeters plus 4 door speakers is six speakers, leaving another 2. So if these other 2 are in the back of the car and they are working, which it appears they are, then the wires are broken to the one that isn't working (or else the speaker is blown). Quote
Guest nimrod Posted March 27, 2004 Report Posted March 27, 2004 Ok smarty pants so i ran out fingers what with using two to type the reply with, I was three fingers short to be able to count them all :( but you are correct with your assumption about the rear quarter panel speakers they are just paired up with the rear door speakers so its either the speaker or the wires in the flexy boot Quote
Guest gmathews Posted March 27, 2004 Report Posted March 27, 2004 OK oops 2 of the speakers are the tweaters at the front sorry. I have a speaker in each of the four doors plus 2 just behind the 3rd row of seats. As for the speakers in the front doors that appears to have been me going deaf, I just checked again, putting my ear near the speakers as I open the door (I know sad but wanted to make sure) and they are not cutting out, like I thought it did when I checked yesturday. Yes there is an amp, sitting just under the storage bin. It sounds like I should ignore what the dealer said and go through the process of illimination again, starting with the speaker and working back. I had heard that changing a door speaker can be a nightmare and not being technically minded was hoping to avoid the job but guess not :( Thanks Quote
Guest nimrod Posted March 27, 2004 Report Posted March 27, 2004 Changeing the speakers not that hard! its just a case of getting the door card off without breaking it or tearing your finger nails out! :( do a search on the topic removeing the fronts been covered and its nearly the same apart from if you have manual windows? the winder handle is removed by sliding the collar away from the main part of the handle and then the handle should pull off! check the removal method for the front doors cardfor further info the speakers are 17cm and are available from any good car stereo shop Quote
