cbwilli Posted August 3, 2009 Report Posted August 3, 2009 Hi GuysI recently bought a 2002 Galaxy 1.9TDI and its been a pain since we took it from the garage The main problem is the turbo (I notice loads of post on this subject)The car has a new turbo and intercooler weeks before it was put in as a part-exOur problem is the turbo stops working and goes into limp mode when put under pressure (e.g. hills etc) this only happens in 4th-6th gears Although if I stop turn the engine off it resets ints not very suitable or safe to do so. One thing that really confuses me and my local garage is that if I put it into cruise control it never happens even when I drive up the longest hills on Motorways duels etc Any advice would be welcome as although we like the car its either easy to fix or the dealer is having it shoved somewhere as it drives me a little crazy at times (with kids in the car!)CheersCarl Quote
big_kev Posted August 3, 2009 Report Posted August 3, 2009 It could be one of many things ( unlikely to be the turbo as it wouldn't reset ). First thought would be a possible pedal problem.....faulty/sticky Brake/Clutch switch or throttle pot. problem. Although it could be several other things, mostly electrical. Quote
seatkid Posted August 3, 2009 Report Posted August 3, 2009 Check if it really had a new turbo and intercooler fitted (look for receipts, any doubt ring up the garage) Limp mode is triggered by ECU "seeing" too much or too little boost. This can be caused by 1. Check the air filter is not completely dirty/blocked 2. Vacuum leaks in the turbo control circuit - check pipes/joints for leaks, splits, collapse also vacuum reservoir, brake servo. 3. Sticking turbo vane actuator - can be freed up with some lubrication and manual working - but you say the turbo has been changed. 4. Faulty TMAP sensor 5. Gummed up TCS turbo control solenoid (an electrically controlled vacuum control valve) 6. Faulty MAF sensor 7. Leaking Boost pipework - check the (large) pipe joints and the intercooler - usually a loud hiss is audible under load 8. Faulty temperature sensor 9. Gummed up or faulty EGR valve Or a combination of some of the above! Start with no.1 - good luck, obviously the previous owner ran out of ideas. Quote
