fergie Posted August 3, 2009 Report Posted August 3, 2009 hi i have a 98 2.3 gal that squeals in dry weather ,ive changed the drive belt and water pump without any joy if i spray the belt or any pullys with wd40 or even water everthing goes quiet for a few seconds the the bloody noise returns has anybody got any ideas because im fed up being stared at driving to work thanks Quote
big_kev Posted August 3, 2009 Report Posted August 3, 2009 Something is stiff ( possibly one of the bearings ) ? Quote
sparky Paul Posted August 3, 2009 Report Posted August 3, 2009 Belt tensioner or idler pulley. Quote
mikej Posted August 3, 2009 Report Posted August 3, 2009 As sparky paul says tensioner or idler pulley they are a complete pain in the arse, the idler is cheaper by a long shot but it's likely to be the more expensive tensioner as this is prone to wear on the rear were the spring sits on the plastic, this causes the tensioner roller to sit at a slight angle and cause the noise. Quote
fergie Posted August 3, 2009 Author Report Posted August 3, 2009 Belt tensioner or idler pulley. B)thanks ill give it a try Quote

mikej Posted August 3, 2009 Report Posted August 3, 2009 To be honest i think the tensioner is dealer part only and i think about the Quote

sparky Paul Posted August 4, 2009 Report Posted August 4, 2009 As mikej says, with a bit of fiddling it is possible to use the idler pulley to replace the one on the tensioner. Both of mine had had it. I found a complete new tensioner cheap on fleabay, and IIRC, I paid around Quote

sparky Paul Posted August 9, 2009 Report Posted August 9, 2009 hi are the 2.0 and the 2.3 tensioner pulleys the same , Not 100% certain, but I am fairly convinced they are the same part... Not sure if this is why you are asking, but there is a second hand one off a 2.0 on fleabay. I would not go for a used one. If your budget is tight, I would get a new idler pulley from the dealer and fit it to your old tensioner. Quote
cscars Posted August 10, 2009 Report Posted August 10, 2009 hi thank you , i was going to put a new one one as i was making sure that the man at frauds didnt try to rip me off , (as if they would ) Quote
dazdaddy Posted September 6, 2009 Report Posted September 6, 2009 i found that on my 2.3 auto t plate i did the belt (aftermarket), then the idle pully, then tensioner and it was still there, i kept doing what your doing spaying wd 40 and so on, but then i bought the ford belt and cleaned all the pullys with wash up liquid to get all the left over wd40 off and fitted the new belt and all was fine.
