Hi all ,

my car was doing the usual with a dodgy MAF sensor , I went to look for one and found them to be really expensive , the cheapest from Lynx was

Does the Mercedes MAF senor have the same fixings, spacings, electricl connections, plugs etc as the ford part?

I have had some of the usual problems regarding the MAF sensor but when I do experience the problem it usually disappears next time I use the car.

I haven't had a long period of days where the problem occurs.

It's worth knowing about the Mercedes option because I believe the Ford part retails at around the

Yes Dave the Maf sensor fits the plug and into the Air trunking exactly , but it does look a wee bit different. The sensor element is at the very tip ,on the outside , and it is a bit longer than the bosch sensor.

 

I'm off to Stonehaven today so I will let you know how it performs.

Somewhere on the TIS is a statement to the the effect that a Bosch MAF can be used to replace the Pierburg part but a Pierburg MAF cannot be used to replace the Bosch part. Doesn't make much sense unless its something to do with calibration ranges - eager to hear your results Barney..

Give my regards to Stonehaven, fond memories of a business trip some years ago now. Sat in car on seafront eating my sarnie at lunchtime.

The MAF sensor is designed to sit in the air trunking in the optimal position to sense the air flow across it, if its position has moved it could be detrimental or an improvement to its operation? I read on one of the American Mustang sites about how they modify the MAF sensor mounting/houseing in order to reposition it for better operation so it has more airflow across it, giving a truer reading of the air flow which leads to better performance! it would be intersting to see the reading of the Merc MAF over the OE MAF on VAG COM or similar has this effect?

It sounds good doesn`t it ? The only thing is however, as Nimrod says, if the air measurement point is in a different position due the different length etc, then you would think performance will be effected and you wouldn`t expect Bosch to put it at a point where less than maximum measurement is achieved. However it may be that if it is situated across the airflow within a reasonable distance, performance will not be any different. We await the results.......and well done barney for finding this out.

Hi all ,

 

Well set off for Stonehaven yesterday , the car drove a little better but still a bit rough , stopped at Kinross and disconnected battery whilst I had a coffee.

After that the car seemed to run much better , it goes up hills without too much effort and the speed does not drop off.

Now I did meet a steep hill outside Dundee that did slow me down but it was very steep , to be expected I suppose. But in general the driving is much more relaxed and you are not always looking over your shoulder.

 

Now in an attempt to get things "perfect" , does anyone think a rattling baffle in the middle silencer box could cause and obstruction to gas flow? Maybe that is the last thing I need to renew. (the catalyst was renewed 2 weeks ago).

 

I looked with interest at the posting about the position of the sensor, I will send a photo of the sensor and maybe do some adjusting of the position as suggested .

Heres a pic of the sensor , it actually sits in about the centre of the trunking when fitted so I dont think i need to adjust anything.

But seriously barney, I don`t know about the loose baffles. Then again I had a Saab 99 Turbo that when fitted with a new silencer became weak on performance, then a few days later there was a bang and a huge hole appeard in the side of it ( the silencer ) and performance was restored. It was actually blocked up with material used to silence it, so what if the loose baffle has caused this "stuff" to partially block the exhaust gas flow on your Galaxy ? You have done a great job on the Maf sensor - hope you get the thing to work properly. It looks like it may be the Maf that`s possibly not in the right place, but you never know. Can you do another photo ?

Are you sure it the box rattleing and not the guard plate on the cat?

I have just tried looking at the picture you have posted but I can not make any sense of it (out of focus- perhaps it didn't travel well when posting onto the site)

yes if it disintergrated it blocks the pipe and air flow checl lam sensore
