n.peckdd Posted July 14, 2009 Author Report Posted July 14, 2009 Thanks for the link much appreciated......... The shaft is now off & a replacement aquired, however the old shaft had a rubber (bump stop?) just after the outer CV joint. The new one does not. Will this be a problem? I've also replaced the wheel bearing while I'm half way there already. The new bearing is a FAG item, which being of cup & ball construction has some movement at the hub (without drive shaft fitted) is this normal? I'm hoping when everything is torqued up this "slop" will be taken up?? Many thanksPaul Quote
gaznlou Posted July 14, 2009 Report Posted July 14, 2009 Sounds as if you have purchased a non OE part, (been a long time, since I worked on these, so if the following info is incorrect, please jump in and correct ) quite sure the rubber, was a balance weight, so without this you will get vibration, as for the bearing, this should not be a problem, (as long as the fitting is correct). please note I am not a qualified mechanic, but done many jobs myself. If you are not 100% confident, then seek further advise. Quote
n.peckdd Posted July 15, 2009 Author Report Posted July 15, 2009 Yes.........the drive shaft is a Shaftech item part N/O VW145ALReManDriv. I've contacted their techhelpline 01212135438 and they said "that it's not an issue & to go for it"!!....so will trust their word on that. With regard to the bearing. I took the hub to my customary MOT station where the owner confirmed that everything should pull-up when back together & torqued. Thanks for your help. Paul. Quote
