Guest Paul Collins Posted March 24, 2004 Report Posted March 24, 2004 Started up the Shazmobile on Saturday, did a bit of car jockeying, everything ok. Loaded the family up, drove off, the engine hesitated on throttle opening, but otherwise drove ok. Switched across to petrol, everything fine. switch back to gas, hesitates. The only way I can describe it is like an SU carburettor (Mini) with no oil in the dashpot. 5 minutes down the M5 and it was cured, no problem since. All I can think is a weak spark. It was very wet and windy at the time, and LPG needs a good spark. So........2 questions Any ideas? Does anyone know the spark plug gap on the VW ADY engine? Paul Quote
Guest nimrod Posted March 24, 2004 Report Posted March 24, 2004 Sounds like you have already sussed the problem! LPG needs a good spark to ignite it! without a100% fully functioning ignition system you will suffer from misfireing, backfireing! and hesitency when the engine is put under load, try a new set of plugs and leads, check with the installer to what plugs he recomends and what gap they need? on my system there is a sticker that gives these details stuck on the inlet manifold so anyone working on the car is aware of what is needed, there is also a sticker telling you to remove the fuse's for the system when jumpstarting the car so as not to fry the ECU or emulator! Guest Idris Posted March 25, 2004 Report Posted March 25, 2004 not that technical so cant really comment on what nimrod mentioned, but I got my 99 2.3 GhiaX back this lunchtime following its LPG conversion (AG with 57litre toroidal). Chap said that he replaced the plugs with NGK Platinum and that they were gapped normally - he said that he didnt need to gap them differently for multipoint systems, just single point ... doesn't mean that much to me to be honest :) Quote
Guest vinny2984 Posted April 1, 2004 Report Posted April 1, 2004 I have similar probs, missing, backfires, stalling really rough tickover, not changing out of gears when it should i have a BIGAS sequential system fitted does anyone have the same? Quote
Guest nimrod Posted April 1, 2004 Report Posted April 1, 2004 Does it do all these things when just running on lpg? I cant see why it should mess the auto box operation running on gas! again I would give the ignition system a good looking at, plugs, leads and the coil pack! lpg needs a good spark to ignite it and electricity is a lazy thing  always looking for the easy way out! any weak point in the system and its off causing most of the problems you've listed Quote
Guest vinny2984 Posted April 1, 2004 Report Posted April 1, 2004 all probs much worse on gas, barely detectable on petrol. but gearbox on both but prefect 1 drive until restarting then bad, then good etc Quote
Guest nimrod Posted April 1, 2004 Report Posted April 1, 2004 If the problems are worse on gas then I would start with the ignition system, get it running right and then see if the auto box still plays up! common problem on the VR6 is the coil pack breaking down ;) pop the bonnet in the dark and try running the engine on gas! get some one to sit in it and give it a bit of throttle! (fast tick over) see if you can see any stray sparks floating around the leads or around the coil pack? they may show up better if the coil pack is a bit damp! spray it with a fine mist, not the garden hose  Quote
