siggenn Posted July 9, 2009 Report Posted July 9, 2009 so I installed an aftermarked xenon kit today, and when finished with it I could not lock the car with the remote. took it for a spin and the wipers only worked at full speed. returned ome and opened the bonnet and removed the plugs to the ballasts. now the car is working perfect. locking and wiping. put on one of the ballasts and still everything works well. connected the other too; same problem again. took it off - all ok. either something wrong with the ballast or do I need to put on a resistor to clear this up? chromedome Posted July 9, 2009 Report Posted July 9, 2009 As far as I know after market HID's are illegal. You also require headlamp washers and self levelling suspension as per factory fit. Quote

MrT Posted July 10, 2009 Report Posted July 10, 2009 Sounds like a dodgy kit putting out electrical noise which is interfering with the management systems. Quote

Hi Siggenn Can you please give some more info, ie, model, year and make of kit ? At a guess you have can-bus type system, and that is what is causing the problem ! Radiotwops they are not ileagal, I have had after market fitted to my car for the past 3 yearswithout any problems with law Quote
insider Posted July 10, 2009 Report Posted July 10, 2009 Provided you are replacing the whole headlamp with an approved HID headlamp then it is not illegal: "In summary it is not permitted to convert an existing halogen headlamp unit for use with HID bulbs. The entire headlamp unit must be replaced with one designed and approved for use with HID bulbs and it must be installed in accordance with the rules stated above." From - http://www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/roadsafety/drs/hidheadlamps However, if the kit you have is an approved aftermarket item then I suggest you wouldn't be having the problems you are unless it is faulty. Are you able to return it under warranty? Quote

Radiotwops they are not ileagal, I have had after market fitted to my car for the past 3 yearswithout any problems with law I have a '01 Sharan 1,9TDi. have tried with ballasts from my passat and still the same issue, so it's not the new kit that is malfunctioning. have even tired hooking up new harness and relay from the battery. and sometimes it works ok, no problem with wipers or locks. then suddenly it starts acting funny again. chromedome Posted July 11, 2009 Report Posted July 11, 2009 I know you wasn't too keen on my views, however, "stupid" electrical problems can be caused by dodgy earth connections. I'm not sure where the earthing points are in that area but give it a try. Quote
aaronp Posted July 11, 2009 Report Posted July 11, 2009 Had similar problem with my wifes car .After installing HID strange things started to happen ....... after long hours ....... replaced battery as had problems starting when is cold ..... sorted ! strange connection but sorted Quote
siggenn Posted July 12, 2009 Author Report Posted July 12, 2009 using a relay and harness straight from the battery it finally works. strange enought i had to tap into the current from the right headlamp. tried first to tap into the left but it was all starting over again then. but when connected through the right lamp it all works. funny though.
