Overheating Engine Problem

I have a 1995 Mondeo 1.8 LX

I have recently noticed the temperature gauge slowly finding a higher point to rest at each time I used the car this past week.

I have checked my oil and water, and they're all topped up with enough coolant.

Today, as soon as I switched the engine on, the temperature rose very rapidly. Within a few minutes or a mile or so, the gauge is in the red zone,... and stays there! I got back today after about 3 miles, worrying all the way home and when I checked, the water coolant piping was still soft, and the engine warm to touch. The radiator fan didn't even kick in. The engine has been running fine.

What could be wrong? Any ideas??

You say the coolant fan is not running! check the fuse's and the relevent connectors for the fan, the fan is controlled by a sensor mounted on the thermostat houseing, the fuse and relay are in the box in the engine bay, the fuse is F2 I believe, the relay is K45 and the sensor is on top of the thermostat houseing which is on the front rhd side on the engine, if the engine has got that hot it may have done for the thermostat! it may be worth your while changeing it to be on the safe side?
