Argos sell an RAC code reader which works on most cars using OBD II.

 

Alternately if you search ebay ypo can find guys selling VAG-COM generic cables to be used with the freeware version of Vagcom. It's basic but a good palce to start.

VAG-COM can be purchased (and works reasonably well with generic interface cables) for approx. $100

I think i may buy a VAG-COM cable for my lappy. However once i do get it how do i use the thing or is that a really stupid question.

 

I have decided to try to fix most of the common faults myself instead of being ripped off from now on
