I have a 1999 1.9tdi Galaxy. I knew the salve cylinder needed changing but I have now lost all gears. After hours of investigation it appears that the fault is with the selector thats mounted on top of the gear box.

Has anyone had any experience of this?, I have managed to find a replacement but didn't know if I would need to take the box off to change it etc.

i had similar problem last year

selector jammed in 5th turned out to be a bolt on selector had sheared, so a nice man in garage made a makeshift longer one and its still ok

unfortunately being stuck in 5th burnt clutch out

but in answer to question gearbox was in situ but had to move bits like expansion chamber etc...

best of luck :P

Thanks for that, the gearstick moves the selector etc but it just doesn't engage into any gear so think something has sheered inside, just didn't want to take it off incase the while box has to come off first.

Hi, i too lost all my gears due to a selector problem. The problem was that the small bolt that secures the selector shaft to the selector mechanisum had come loose and fallen out. If this is the problem it is possible to remove the selector from above and replace the bolt (you need to remove various bits and pieses and drop dowm gearbox end), however this will leave the bolt in the box which will probably cause big probs. i ended up taking box out and splitting to get bolt out. lots of work but low cost!

Good luck
