Hello peeps i bought me a 2002 1.9tdi recently with a dead air con i think it may be dead as one of the pipes of the compressor is kind of sheared off lol, my question is two fold really:-

1 the pipe broken is the one that ends up going along the drivers side chasis leg to the baulk head, i cant feel a joint but the Fraud dealer shows me on his micro fische that this pipe is in deed jointed , is this correct and is it an easy seperation

2 as the compressor has been 'open to the atmosphere' for an unknown length of time, is it posible it could be scrap anyway

3 assuming that all the negatives are positive is it worth spending money on a system that seems to be rubbish anyway

having read so much about air con on here i am begining to doubt it is worth throwing any money at.

another option is to take out a warrenty which you pay monthly that covers all aspects of you air con

Is there any reason why you can't just replace it with rubber fuel pipe? Cheap to buy and easy to work/route, its on the low pressure side so should easily take the pressure?

Has to be specialist pipe compatible with R134a and PAG Oil - Low pressure side is still up to 5 bar. Plain rubber fuel pipe will probably degrade quickly and contaminate the rest of the system.

i did a report on this a couple of years ago, for those who say it cant be done ie many air con specialist, let me tell you what i did,

i had an old tdi with the same pipe split underneath where its exposed and also broken 3 inches from the compressor.

i got 2 sizes of proper aircon tubing from a bloke on the web from chesterfield, as one pipe was thin and the compressor one fatter. something like 10 mm and 16 or something.

i cut the pipes where they were jagged with a tube cutter to stop any filings going astray.

i siliconed the pipes and pushed them around 3 inches into the rubber tube and put 4 jublee clips each side.

luckily a friend was indeed a laffing air con man and only charged me

If you are near North London, I can suggest an Air Con guy, who rebuilds the pipes himself. I have had a very hard time finding one capable and reliable, but he is the one. New pipes from dealer are very esxpensive.

Good Luck
