i have an 04 plate 130tdi galaxy fitted with 205/55x16 97w tyres and 2 need replacing. Ihave 2 spare tyres of my old galaxy they are the same size and reinfored but only a 97H rating the fitted said i could not fit these as my insurance would be no good if they found out. The ford manual says 97H o. 97W does this mean both are ok.

i think as long as they are on the same axle then im sure there fine.

go on to mrtyre.com, they explain what the letters mean, i am sure it is the speed rating of the tyre. w's can cope with faster speeds. obviously later galaxy's have a higher top speed than the earlier ones so ford will have uprated the speed rating of the tyre. if you oly potter around town the lower h ones should be fine but if you race against jenson button at the weekends then i would stick with the higher rated ones.

can a normal shalaxy go that fast?im not talking about the weird vr6 thingys :) :)

If the car has W rated tyres and the manual also says W rated then that's what you should fit.

I too have a 130 and my manual states W for the size of wheel.

What price do you put on your family's lives!

Dumb question...how do you tell if the tyre you have fitted is the re-inforced version that Galaxies need?

I've just had some new front tyres, and have decided to take a break from the dunlop sports and try Toyo Proxies - the CF1C. Hunting around the Toyo website I couldn't see a reference to the tyres being re-inforced....any thoughts?

They have the word "reinforced" or "RF" or "extra load" printed somewhere near the size mark. You can use the load rating to determine its suitability e.g 205/55 R16 W 91 is not reinforced but 205/55 R16 W 94 is... You should use the load rating printed in the owner's manual as a minimum (higher is OK) - using a lower rating is dangerous and invalidates your insurance. Likewise the speed rating in the owners manual (e.g. W or H) is the minimum requirement for safety and insurance purposes. Edited by seatkid

Thanks SK...I can't see any of those words or marks on the tyres anywhere, but then I can't see them on the rears eitehr. My manual doesn't specify re-inforced tyres for my tyre size, though it does for some others....I might contact Toyo directly.

cheers

Just ensure the load rating is correct (IIRC 94 or 95 or higher)
