skypilot Posted June 17, 2009 Report Posted June 17, 2009 Hi Guys! This is my first post so please be gentle.... I have trawled through the FAQ's and done a search but no exact same topics could be found. The problem is thus: Accelerating past a very slow truck at approx 50mph, 4th gear, the power dropped off to idle revs only (c.1000rpm). Input from accelerator made no difference. Glow plug light began flashing too. I coasted to a halt and the engine was still running at idle. I switched off the engine counted to ten, restarted and all was well again and the flashing plug light was no longer lit. Car has driven well enough all day although I was a bit anxious of a repeat. Prio to this I have noticed a couple of times that at higher revs the power seems to bottom out. usually around the 3,000 rpm mark and that the glow plug light is often very slow to extinguish when waiting to start and when this happens, the engine starts with a brief surge of around 2,00rpm. I'm not sure if there is just one fault or several so any advice appreciated. Vehicle model is 2001 Galaxy 1.9TDi Zetec. Quote
NikpV Posted June 17, 2009 Report Posted June 17, 2009 engine/transmission went into limp home mode I guess but why ... possible the problem is a turbo vane problem where they have coked up .. look in stickies under external links where DT1 has posted an epic tale about tis to quote his opening paragraph The turbo in my 2001 MkII Galaxy Tdi diesel engine (and many others such as the Sharan, Golf, etc) has moveable vanes, sometimes referred to as a Variable Nozzle Turbo (VNT). These vanes move between two plates with very tight tolerances. Over time these soot up and stick. This is likely to cause an 'over boost' condition which the engine sensors pick up. The ECU puts the car into 'limp mode' whereby turbo boost and fuel supply is reduced to protect the engine. Switching the engine off resets the ECU until the vanes stick again. This symptom is most likely when the engine is cold. This problem is likely to affect every turbo with variable vanes. Quote
