I have an 03 Galaxy TDi 115 Bhp it has developed a problem, it started with a knock when steering at low revs in tight situations car parks etc., it seemed like the same noise that you get when you put the power steering on full lock and the relief valve cuts in. The aux. belt tensioner was bouncing quite a bit so I thought it might be that. Took it of and checked it it seemed OK so I changed the aux belt. Still knocking, had a listen at the steering pump thinking that if it was faulty it might cause the tensioner might bounce.

Yes it was making a noise so I changed it. Still knocking. I looked on the web which indicated a power steering low pressure pipe fault generally found on earlier models than mine, changed it Still knocking. Took the car into a Ford garage "Its the Tensioner" Changed it and sure enough it stopped for a couple of weeks but its still knocking. New tensioner bouncing. Checked the Air con pulley for stiffness it seems OK and the noise gets no noisier when the aircon is on. Checked the altenator for free running it is OK, Running out of ideas and hair now help me before I go completely bald.

ARB links and track rod ends are common problems. Edited by seatkid

It's got to be the Link Rod above the front wheels. You can easily see one vertically connected above the wheels. A similar knocking nois occured to my previous galaxy and once it was changed the Knock dissapeared for good.

I give another vote for ARB links knocking, it's the most common front suspension/steering defect.

As for the bouncing tensioner, did they check/change the idler pulley too? That can cause the same symptoms, and does seem odd that disturbing the auxiliary belt cured the problem for a while.

Does the knock occur when the vehicle is stationary - i.e. on or near full lock?

If so I would be guessing your issue is belt related. I'm sure you got the correct belt and your other replacements were new?

If your knocking happens on change of direction of steering I might suspect it is suspension related arbs or track rod ends.

The struts were changed fairley recently. The knock has now got worse and although it is most prevelant when steering at slow speed, it goes when I remove the Aux Belt or jack up the car on either side and steer. The aux belt is new the tensioner is new the steering pump is new. Its as if the pressure relief valve that cracks when normaly on full lock is operating all the time.
