frogeye Posted June 6, 2009 Report Posted June 6, 2009 Hi, The title says it all. I've got one rather worn metal key and one plastic emergency key, can I use these to program a new key via the PATS system detailed in the FAQ. I'm not sure whether this plastic one has a transponder in it.Thanks Frogeye. Quote
gregers Posted June 6, 2009 Report Posted June 6, 2009 yes iirc all keys have a transponder chip in them,if as you say your key is worn then thats the way to go,save a bloody fortune compared to taking it to the stealers to be reprogramed. Quote
srafferty Posted June 7, 2009 Report Posted June 7, 2009 I read somewhere that the plastic key is to gain access only and as a template for new keys. But can you not program with the one transponder key? Quote
suzuki91 Posted June 7, 2009 Report Posted June 7, 2009 my plastic key had a chip in it. but it seems not to be coded for the car? i plan to try and recode it sometime. Quote
frogeye Posted June 7, 2009 Author Report Posted June 7, 2009 I read somewhere that the plastic key is to gain access only and as a template for new keys. But can you not program with the one transponder key? It suddenly dawned on me that I should just try starting the car with the plastic key, and sure enough no luck. First two attempts engine not turning over, third attempt did turn over a fire and ran for a second or so before cutting out. The immobiliser light in the drivers door lit solid for the first couple of seconds and then flashed rapidly.... I guess this means no chip inside my plastic key after all. I'll have to double check the PATS faq, but I'm pretty sure that if you don't have two transponder keys your buggered... I guess I can't present the same one twice or hold the metal key next to the ignition whilst using the plastic one. I presume the system must detect two different but recognised transponder chips in order to open the program mode. I think I'm going to write a letter to the two lots of previous owners in the log book and tempt them with a stamped addressed envelope and the promise of a Quote
suzuki91 Posted June 8, 2009 Report Posted June 8, 2009 i now have coded the pats chip in the plastic key. did have two metal ones to do it though.if any one else has a plastic key try to start your engine now before you need it in anger! why was'nt it coded from the factory? Quote
