Ga73 Posted June 4, 2009 Report Posted June 4, 2009 Hi, When i bought the Alhambra Tdi upon acceleration there was alot of smoke and hesitation so I blocked the EGR valve pipe with a screw and now along with regular doses of millers in the diesel its running much better (averages around 38mpg on the trip computer on A roads...is this pretty good/average/bad??). But I cant help but wonder if it wasnt needed (apart from emissions requirement) then surely it wouldnt be fitted, Ive read it also cools the combustion process, so long term is it better to remove the EGR give it a thorough clean and refit or does it really not make a difference to reliability/mpg. cheers Gary Quote
sepulchrave Posted June 5, 2009 Report Posted June 5, 2009 In a word. No. They HAVE to fit it to beat tighter emissions regs. in other marketplaces. The combustion chamber cooling effect is a non-isusse in an oil burner, it is really only relevant for modern high compression ultra-lean burn petrol engines. Quote
Scorpiorefugee Posted June 5, 2009 Report Posted June 5, 2009 (edited) Disconnect it, IE cap the acutator and bung the pipe, or find a ball bearing to push up the pipe and refit, providing the valve still shuts, or fit this; http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/EGR-Valve-Power-Pipe...%3A1%7C294%3A50 Mine was all clogged up when checked after fitting a new turbo, and on investigation they are better without it and the MOT will be easier to pass as they dont test NO2 only particals. After 3 months without it i can confirm it uses less fuel (first time ever to 500miles before the warning message) and seems to have a little more power. I hope Richard won't mind this quote as I found it very useful. Follow the link and you might find this interesting and also worth a visit to the manufacturer's site for a fuller description. The bad news is that I have been trying to contact them without success. PS - Quick update - Just got a reply and ordered item at Edited June 5, 2009 by Scorpiorefugee Quote
