Hi all,

I am going to change my front wheel Brake discs as they are getting quite worn.

Are there any pitfalls I should know about ? I mean it should be quite easy to knock them off once the securing bolts are off. I just remember getting my Mondeo done and it took the garage ages to get the discs off , lots of heat and big Hammers.

any advice would be appreciated.

I was thinking of getting the Car to the ship I work on and using all the equipment onboard to do the job.

Barney.

Changing the front disc's has been covered before, its an easy job if you have some mechanical knowledge and a few tools? you will need to replace the pads as well!

jack up and support the vehicle! remove the wheel, remove the spring clip holding the pads in place, at the back of the calipers are two 17mm allen key bolts, undo these, remove them and the caliper should come off!

remove the old pads, to get the piston back into the caliper housing undo the bleed nipple and apply pressure to the piston while turning it clockwise, either get the correct tool for this or use a big G clamp and pipe grips!

I say to undo the bleed niple as you dont want the old brake fluid returning through the ABS block (if fitted) and taking crap from the brake lines with it and blocking a vavle or pump!

to remove the disc undo the counter sunk screw holding it onto the hub, round the back of the hub you will find two large bolts 17/18mm? undo these and the caliper mount should drop off allowing you to remove the disc! if the disc is a bit stubborn use a bit of persusion! love tap it with a hammer!

clean up the hub surface where the disc mounts, fit the new disc, refit the caliper mount, stick in the new pads, replace the caliper and lube the mounting pins slightly! replace the spring clip, bleed the caliper and repeat on the other side

have fun! and remember to drive carefully for the first few miles to allow the pads/pistons to reseat!

I have left out the minor details like sticking the hose on the bleed nipple and collecting the old fluid and disposing of safely etc .... your a grown up you should know all that stuff!

Just changed my front disks and pads. No problems. You'll need the 18mm socket for the caliper mounting. I used a little copper grease on the back of the new disks to ease removal next time.Out of interest I paid
