NikpV Posted May 26, 2009 Report Posted May 26, 2009 (edited) Finally sourced a clutchplate for the air con (it was attached to a brand new compressor) all for less than the price of the clutch kit from fords. A little tricky to tighten up but thats done. Looks like the clutch coil which was working til the old plate fell off is now not working - cltuch doesnt engage but get 13.2v ( no load ) at the connector on the compressor when set to auto and 0v when set to econ. Any other ideas - looks like swapping the whole compressor/clutch for the new one is likely to be the way to go (got a free fill up from a mobile aircon guy due) how easy is swapping the compressor? anybody done it themselvs - looks like relaese aux tensioner, remove the 2 air con pipes and unplug clutch, then unbolts compressor any thoughts/comments? gregers Posted May 26, 2009 Report Posted May 26, 2009 you will need to have the aircon system bled/removed ,i was told that aircon(fluid???)is extremley nasty stuff. i didnt know that fords done a clucth kit, learn summit every day.thanx teach.but does seem that fords are aware of the problem of failing compressors????? Bigjeeze Posted May 26, 2009 Report Posted May 26, 2009 Are you sure it has sufficient gas in the system? If you don' then it won't run anyway. I bought one of those DIY kits that included a gauge so I can at least tell if it has any gas. Quote
NikpV Posted May 26, 2009 Author Report Posted May 26, 2009 BJ - clutch has voltage when aircon on auto but clutch doesnt engage (0v when on econ mode) so either the coil has burnt out or there is a mechanical problem with clutch plate/pulley system Quote
mikej Posted May 26, 2009 Report Posted May 26, 2009 (edited) Not sure which you have petrol or diesel but changed a 2.3 compressor last week and it was a piece of cake, really is no big deal, release aux belt tension and off with the belt, , two bolts to remove the shield from the pump 10mm i think, two aircon pipes off, one bolt on each and four bolts that hold the compressor on and off it comes !you are not suppose to release the aircon gas to the air as it don't do the planet any good or so i was told, but if you ain't bothered about the planet and don't wanna suck on the gas you could just press on the pipe valve and out it will come! ;) but that is your choice. Before i get slated my system was empty already...mike...p.s don't forget your new o ring seals which you should buy from VW not Frawds as they are much cheaper, pence ! mikej Posted May 26, 2009 Report Posted May 26, 2009 Try aircon auto down in Port Talbot South Wales, they are an aircon company local to me and have always been very competitive on price for me anyway together with very good service Quote

Firstly remember mine was a 2.3 petrol not diesel. All under the car except when removing/refitting belt as a little fiddley to get it over pulleys and out the way due to fat fingers lol. loosening the alternator belt, we must be the same age then ;) The tensioner is spring loaded and a socket and wrench from within the wheel arch will do it (no need to remove the wheel) as you only slacken it for a second, belt off and let it spring back, simple honest ! NOTE Make sure you draw a little diagram of the path the belt takes prior to removal, so much easier than trying to figure it out later. :( Edited May 27, 2009 by mikej Quote
