I currently have an ST170, but am looking to upgrade.

I have had a few problems with the ST170, and I am wondering if the ST220 suffers the same quality issues.

Can anyone advise based on experience and knowledge

Many thanks

Dont know about reliability and build, but in general the main stream mondeos are well built and reliable. The reviews on them are favourable to, but what scares me is the depereciation - I have seen predictions of 50% in 12 months......ouch!

Have seen a few good deal on the net though for new ones through car brokers - some as low as

I have an ST220 on an 03 plate - done about 18,000 miles in it now. It is a pretty good car from the point of reliability - i.e. no major problems yet. It is cheap to service - the 12,500 was 130 quid. The only thing that I would be wary of is the thirst. Motorway runs with a soft right foot you can get 29 - 30 mpg. However in stop/start traffic and accross coutry (where the foot does tend to go down a bit - the car lends itself to that!) - probably around 21 - 22 mpg. Around town - stop start - picking kids up etc. I have managed to get as low at 15!

The only other thing that may concern you is the rate it goes through tyres! - Mine came with Contis on it and the fronts lost tread - all of it - after 6,000 miles. A bit of complaining got me a new front set of my choice - I went for Michelins and they are still going 12K later - although they will be ready to change in a few weeks time. The contis on the back are also getting close to the mark. The tyres are between 120 (if you fit them yourself) up to 190 per tyre as they are the 40 profile.

Overall - not a cheap car to run on the petrol and tyre side but damn good fun to drive with it being a little less conspicuous than other cars of similar power (even though I do have it in the blue). However - servicing is reasonably priced and some of the parts are sourced from ordinary mondeos - hard to see what ones but still. On long journeys I do miss the old Rover Sterling for comfort but the ST220 is the best family/tourer/sports car that I have come accross for a while.

If the choice was betwwen the 170 and the 220, I would still go for the 220 - the new ones with the 6 speed box like you have on the 170 now will possibly be a bit better but who cares when the old 5 speed will take you from 5 to 90 in third - if there was anywhere that you could do 90 legally except a track that is!

Get one!

Cheers

John
