Hi, I would like some advice on changing my oil and filter on my Gal 1.9 tdi 2003, I've read some topics on this site how ever, i keep on seeing oil cooler, and oil filter which one is which do i change, both ? can some one help me in this area. thanks for your help, pictures would help alot if any body has any of the process

You change the oil filter, the oil cooler is exactly as its name suggests - just a cooler. The filter is the bit that collects the larger particals floating around in the oil and must be changed.

 

Its a very simple job so relax, just take your time you'll be fine.

That'll depend on the previous change and how strong you are :unsure: It should be done up roughly hand tight and then another half turn but some people/garages insist on doing them up as tight as possible which will cause you some issues when getting the old one off. There are tools out there which attach to socket wrenches and either have a belt or chain which grips the old one. Alternatively you can stab the old filter with a screwdriver and then turn it but that will be messy and whilst very unlikely can give you a nasty scenario if you still can't get it off. Most of thats worst case though, I've not come accross one that I couldn't undo by hand in the end but if you are unsure then try and turn it just slightly now, less then 1cm movement - if it moves tighten it back up, you shouldn't loose any oil and will know that you'll be able to remove it easily when the time comes.

 

Some final points if you've never done a change before:

 

1) Go for a drive first and get the car up to operating temperatures, when you get back leave it to stand for 5/10 minutes and then drain the old oil - you need it to be warm as it'll flow out of the engine better and take more deposits with it but not hot enough that it burns you :ph34r:

 

2) You should replace the sump plug washer (vw call it a gasket ford some reason) when you refit the plug - they cost pennies but can save the hassle of a leaking sump plug.

 

3) When fitting the new filter, dip your finger in the old oil and smear some around the rubber seal of the new filter - this aids it to form a good seal and reduces the chances of leaks - don't overtighten.

 

4) Fill your new oil slowly, don't expect it to take exactly what the book says as the filter won't get any until its been pumped by the engine - rely on the dipstick for accurate measuring.

 

5) Start the car but don't rev it, the oil light may stay on for a few seconds but should go out within 5 seconds of starting, allow the car to idle for a few minutes before turning off, check the oil level again - you'll probably need to put more in as the filter will now have taken some. Ensure you don't overfill

 

6) Check the level a couple more times over the next few journeys.

just found out that my gal has a paper filter where does that go? that shop told me that it will go inside a casing which has a nut at the bottom, " i just need to undo that nut" is this correct?

Duh sorry yeah the diesels are indeed in a case = its located under the plastic cover that go's over the engine pull that off and its upright at the front - unscrew the top and remove the old filter, there are two seals that should be replaced at the same time.

sorry for sounding daft do you mean under the bonet? so i dont have to get under the car to change the filter?

Correct, the filter is only accessible from the bonnet. As you look at the engine, its under the plastic cover with the ford and TDI badges on. This cover is literally yanked upwards, and then forwards to remove (Mind the grommet around the dipstick) - you'll then see a black plastic cylinder shaped object in front of the engine with a screw cap - remove the cap and the filters in there.

Remember to remove the dipstick before "yanking" the cover off! Don't use a chain wrench or shove a screwdriver through it as the "case lid" is plastic and has to be reused. Hopefully you'll be able to twist it off using one or two hands gripping tightly round it. Remove the old filter carefully as it will drip, have newspaper or a plastic bag ready. The two seals to change are on the plastic case lid. They are best removed carefully using a small screwdriver to prize them off.

Screw up the lid hand tight. It shouldn't leak due to the rubber seal. Mine never does.

Thanks for that, i cant do it with my hands so i think i need to buy a 76mm 14 flat socket i've heard so much about, is that correct?

Get an oil filter wrench - strap type.

 

The Cap is supposed to be torqued to 25Nm - or put it another way VERY hand tight by the way. :angry2:

Couple of problems. The socket will be quite expensive as you are buying a big piece of chromium plated steel. The chain wrench might crack the plastic dome. Its possible to do it gently I suppose down at the lowest part where the threads are to give more strength. Have you tried it wearing rubber gloves? They give more grip.

You don't need a chain wrench.. the diesel has a replaceable paper filter inside a metal "can". Have you taken the engine sound-deadener cover off yet and found the filter assembly? An ordinary socket set should have the right sized part... I have forgotten what is required (allen key or socket itself) despite having been driving around for the past month without the cover fitted on mine due to my electrical issues. I only re-fitted the covers on Monday evening too. Guess I'm over-tired :-(

Having a nightmare undoing the top of the filter canister, got a filter cup type socket it fits fine but i still cant get the top off any ideas? its even rounding off the top of the socket where the extension bar goes in. but i dont what to break the top because its plastic, if it does break can i get hold of one?

Let me tell you! I needed a filter wrench! (eek, eeek)

 

You could try some sort of cloth belt and a large screwdriver. Be careful. :angry2:

You are trying to unscrew it anticlockwise aren't you? Otherwise something is very wrong.

 

My experience of the VAG plastic upright filter housings (Skoda Fabia) is it isnt that tight. (It doesnt need to be as the O ring seal doesnt rely on tightening the housing to form a seal)

 

I use a simple pair of pipe pliers on the large hex head on the housing and it comes off a doddle - much easier than the old screw on cannister type.

 

 

Oil filters (and housings) must not be over tightened.

 

Plastic housing types are just nipped up lightly when they are fully screwed in.

 

Old style screw on metal cannisters should be spun on until the seal just contacts the mating face, then turn the filter an additional 1/4 turn.

My filter cap (original AUY code engine) says Nm!

 

Thats tight!!! You'd be pretty strong to do that by hand, I'd be doing well to do Nm.

 

Mind you, I wont be nistaken for Arnie. ;)

if i can just put my 2 pennuth in oil filter on galaxy diesel im assuming is same or very similar to a volvo v70 d5 and a polo tdi which ive changed oil on several times filter is indeed on top & easily accesable socket size is 36mm and tigtening torque is 25 nm for both polo & volvo german swedish french do a socket for about 6/7
