hi im new to the forum and have just bought a 2002 galaxy tdi (auy) automatic

due to the fact we have 3 kids and the latest addition arrived 3 weeks ago and we needed a bigger car and didnt have much cash i bought a spares or repair galaxy that apparently needed an engine due to being seized.the previous owner said the oil pump had failed and the car started to smoke badly out of the exhaust and it stopped

the car had not been run for a while

anyway today a friend of mine spent some time on it before we bought the expensive engine

the engine wasnt seized as it would turn by hand

the battery was dead when we got it so it was charged it but the car wouldnt turn over

we plugged diagnostic in and it showed up imobiliser fault so we banged steering colum and the fault cleared?

and the car started but it sounds like the timing is out ?it idles ok but doesnt rev clean

also the auto box will not go into park is there any issues with the solenoids?

if anyone has any idea's let me know and i will keep you all informed on my project galaxy

It won't rev because the turbo has had it.

The turbo probably IS seized or the shaft has snapped, the exhaust smoke was probably the turbo seals failing.

Whip off the sump and check the oil pump, if the pump is ok then whip off the camcover, if all is well under there then you may get away with just a new turbo for now.

Of course if you can find a complete guaranteed secondhand engine with turbo for sensible money then replace the lot to be sure.

HI thanks for the reply going to check today also is it a possibility the crankshaft pully could of slipped or is it that tight tolerence it would lock engine up straight away thanks dave

hi guys i have tried every thing on this car to get it running and cant put my finger on the problem

basically the car starts then cuts out straight away

the fuel pump in the tank is working

the timing seems right

the crank sensor has been changed

there is no fault codes in the ecu

any ideas would be great as it looks like its going to have to go to a main dealer soon

and i just havnt got the cash to sign a blank cheque thanks dave

hi thanks for the replys guys i havnt touched the key its the one the guy gave me when i bought the car

i thought if it was imobilser the car would not fire atall

take the key apart(gently)make sure your over a table, and see if you can find a black chip in the side of the key part(horse shoe section),if not its missing. Edited by gregers

hi thanks guys for the info

i cant do anything untill tuesday now as the garage is closed they normally specialise in mechanical repairs and this is thowing them they are really genuine and i trust them he did plug into it and it said imobiliser fault but he banged cowling and it cleared

i know a auto lock smith so i phoned him and he said he can make me a new key if i have the code but ford dont just give them out

if the imobilser its self is faulty how much am i looking at and is it a main dealer job

again thanks for the help any suguestions from you experiance is more than welcome

well if you have to go down main dealer route be prepared to have long arms and short pockets, iirc it will cost somewhere between Edited by gregers

I just re-read the thread and realised you said it was running, albeit roughly, before the start-stop syndrome.

In that case its probable that the immobiliser pickup coil in the ignition lock is disconnected/faulty connection (i.e. back to where you were at the very beginning)

If you want to check the key, just in case some numpty opened it and the PATS chip fell out (as it often does) then this is what it looks like....

hi thanks for the picccy i will check tuesday

i have llooked on ebay and there is a guy selling an ecu and key for the 2002 tdi auto galaxy is it possable to fit and cure the fault or is that too easy i remember pump coding could be an issue

hi seatkid i was given the wrong info at the begining of the thread this has been the fault from the start he just didnt explain it to me very well

the bit that through us out is we bought it as apparently seized and needing an engine

if it had just been that it would be working now

im not having any look with cars as my wifes auto broke its engine mounting and nearly dropped the gearbox on the floor every time you put it in gear everything always happens on bank hols lol

If the PATS chip is missing, all you need is a replacement PATS chip and have your ECU reprogrammed to accept the new key (dealer only IIRC). If you buy a new blank key or an old key off ebay ensure it is supplied c/w PATS chip (not to be confused with the remote chip)

Consider people like this for a simpler cheaper route.

hi sorry guys the car is still giving me grief

and i think i have found the problem when checking the cambelt timing

i bought the correct timing kit

and i reset the old cambelt up using the kit to double check timing to rule out problem

when the timing is set up correctly and the tensioner is set correct betweeen the arrow

the engine locks up when turned over by hand

but if you back the tensioner off the engiine turns over freely

any suguestions before we take the head off

i starting to think this is the main problem why the car wont run

Valves hitting piston crowns. Sounds as if you are way out. Check the crankshaft TDC at the flywheel or use a welding rod or similar through glowplug on no. 1 (furthest from bell housing). Remember the timing belt pulley on the crank may be loose - you need to check this.

hi thanks for the reply my thoughts aswell

my mate says the belt is so tight as well it looks like it doesnt need a tensioner

i think it has the wrong belt fitted it is just getting to become a problem i think the guy who sold it me must like his horlicks to sleep at night ,he even talked about my kids etc siezed my A**E

i have ordered a new belt kit

so i wil keep you all informed also just out of intrest is there any galaxy experts in manchester/warrington cheshire who want to earn a few quid or talk on msn so i can pick there brains

If that's the case your head is wrecked and you should take it off and check that all is well in there.

I think you may be digging yourself a deeper hole buying all these bits and throwing them at a duff engine, but it's your munny...

hi agree if the timing is badly out the head will be goosed but if i recondition the head or buy a new engine i will have to still fit a new timing kit as the engine is expensive and most breakers wont offer warrenty if you dont fit a new kit

i havnt really spent much cash really only a crank sensor ,timing tool kit ,got a vagcom kit which has just arrived which i think will be a good investment

the reason its taking so long to fix is because im trying to do it cheaply and im calling in favours off friends as i dont have alot of cash

hi all just thought i would give you an update

i went today to work at my mates garage on the galaxy today as he was struggling to get time on it

as it was locking up when timed right i set about removing the head

any way when i removed the intercooler pipe thats under the timing belt side of the engine

lots of oil poured out of it and i mean lots

so i checked the turbo and its knackered

so i sumise the engine is shot aswell so i have nearly removed the full engine and box

ready for a new unit

i know need to find an engine and turbo auy 115)

i think i might have an engine sourced whats the best route to take on the turbo as i know you guys should know thanks dave

Took you five weeks to stop digging then....... :)

Why not buy a good engine WITH a turbo still hanging off it?

hi i know lol but as i said it wasnt a priority at his garage its just been parked up

i now have completely removed engine and autobox finished this morning it weighed a ton

it hasnt really been a major thing to rush but im on it now lol

im just now trying to find a complete engine and blower and it will soon slot back in

if any one knows where there is a galaxy in a local yard that doesnt charge the earth please let me know thanks dave

hi all i just thought i would let you know to put an end to the thread

i got the car running last weekend it runs sweet as a nut and fired straight

away

i fitted new belt kit and full sevice kit

new gearbox fluid

i sorted the problem where it would go into park due the gearshift lever assembly was knackered which is where the park solenoid is

the car just failed mot due to brakes all round which i just replaced and the front indicator doesnt work due to bulb holder knackered which im waiting to arrive from fords

i fixed the spare wheel carrier by replacing cable which i definately recomend people doing before they buy new

i regreased the wipers as they seized

i am pleased with the results but its been a lot of hard work but i think i know my way around it now for the future

lol the engine and turbo swop seems very difficult but once you started it aint that bad lol

anyone need a good as new dual mass flywheel that came with my low milage engine as mine was an auto and didnt need it offers invited lol

thanks for the help guys it is appreciated
