NikpV Posted May 14, 2009 Report Posted May 14, 2009 Hi, I read a comment you made about front swivel seats quite some time ago and am intrigued. I had a Galaxy Ghia 2005/05 plate for 2 years and was quite upset as I couldnt find any way to make it swivel so decided it obviously didn't. Ive just had to change this due to an accident to a differnt Galaxy - 2005/55 but exact same spec (MK2 Dies Ghia 1.9). Was hoping this one might have them but can't seem to locate any "handle" on this one either - yet I know for sure it has never had dvd fitted as bought from 1st owner. Saw a chap on ebay selling 2 front seats same trim as mine and asked about them - he said they swivel but before I paid I wanted to see a picture of them - now I have I cant see anything that looks different on them to mine but he is adamant he took them off as salvage from breaking car and they DO swivel. Now starting to think I must be missing something really obvious and maybe I spent last 2 years with swivel seats after all but too late now. The only thing I can seem to move is the large bar at front/under seat to move seat back and forth - what should I be looking for and where? Any help greatly appreciated - really dont want to agree to go and buy these seats which are miles from home only to discover I had them already ! Do you have any photos at all to show where the handle to talk about is located. Appreciate any help at all and many thanks - ddhh33 (redhead, but clearly bottle blonde at moment !!) swivel seats will have these handles .. unless they have changed the position/style since 2001 ps sorry I had to create a post from your pm to upload picture - you may need to make a couple more posts to see the picture though Quote

mikej Posted May 14, 2009 Report Posted May 14, 2009 To be honest in the 4 years i've had mine i have turned the seats around once and no more as it is such a pain in the arse to do i don't really see the point, just my opinion though and you may well have a good reason for wanting this type of seat? Quote
MrT Posted May 15, 2009 Report Posted May 15, 2009 The swivel seats are very different and a conversion would be probably more expensive than a replacement. Whilst they sound a good idea the seats are actually very difficult to turn around (especially captains chairs) and you cannot do this from inside the car. You need to move the seats back and forward and have the back at the right angle before you can turn. You also must be very careful about driving with the passenger seat turned around as it has the side air bag in it (some models) and this would then be against the driver and could cause an injury if it went off. If the seat is also height adjustable (some models) when trying to turn the drivers seat and you move the wrong lever (they do look the same) the seat jumps up as there is no load on it and hits you in the face with quite a whack, it happened to me to my families amusement. suzuki91 Posted May 15, 2009 Report Posted May 15, 2009 i turn my passenger seat round to load my windsurfers into the car, dont think its that hard?remove the head rest first then lay it down to the dash, boards fit in a treat.. Quote

Wouldn't it be easier to just put the back of the seat flat then you get the front footwell as well for extra length? Quote
suzuki91 Posted May 17, 2009 Report Posted May 17, 2009 could do that, but my way the boards sit nicely and the dash is protected by the seat.the longest board goes from the dash to the rear door trim and sits low enough to see the mirror and most of the window. Quote
smokie Posted May 18, 2009 Report Posted May 18, 2009 Gotta agree with most of the other points i have only ever swiveled my seats around once and it was hardwork espicially the drivers seat the armrest kept catching on stuff and i nearly put my back out in the process lol won't be doing it again in a hurry Quote
big_kev Posted May 19, 2009 Report Posted May 19, 2009 I find the swivelling front seats very useful......or at least the passenger one. When travelling long journeys the wife sits in the left hand middle seat with the front passenger seat turned around so she can stretch out with her legs on it. Also this gives her some extra space to put all her crap....magazines, sweets etc. It has the added bonus in that she is not in the front nagging me about my speed....driving too close to the car in front etc. Plus also with the old tdi belting down the motorway I can't her the much anyway. Another added bonus is that I can put all my long distance important stuff, fags, drinks, maps etc on the front seat without worrying about them shooting off into the footwell when some git in a beamer or merc cuts me up. And as mentioned previously it is handy being able to quite easily get 8 foot + timbers etc from b&q into the vehicle. OK in the event of an accident the deployment of the passenger side airbag ( not fitted in the very early models ) will most likely have some dangerous implications but as this does not affect the driver I couldn't really care. p.s. did i mention that this means you can put the wife in the back  Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted May 19, 2009 Report Posted May 19, 2009 If you have a bad back, the rotating driver's seat can be a blessing as you can partly turn it to assist in your exit from the vehicle :-) Quote
NikpV Posted May 19, 2009 Author Report Posted May 19, 2009 actually I dont find the passenger seat difficult to turn at all, the drivers seat is a little more tricky but we still regularly swivel them when we have to picnic in the car in the winter or if caught in the rain... you do have to be careful getting the drivers seat turned back ... there is usually a pause in all conversation to see whether dad is going to get his chin clonked when he pulls the wrong handle to their general merriment :angry2: Quote

The point is the passenger side airbag does affect the driver as it is (at least in mine) installed in the side of the seat back adjacent to the door pillar. When the seat is rotated the air bag is now in the side of the seat back against the driver. Quote

Well many thanks to all the comments - I was lucky enough that the chap on ebay really DID have swivel seats to match my 2005 ghia. We did a deal - I paid him a lesser price than he wanted but he came along and took out my non-swivel ones as a swap and fitted the swivel ones instead. My husband thinks I'm mad (he reckons I'll never use them.....but he might like the posting about me not facing front....means I can't see the speedo!) However, I have no intention of having them swivelled whilst driving - just great for picnics, more room for changing after a day at Thorpe Park and far easier to feed the baby on day trips out so I am now well pleased.....now I only have to get my brake problem sorted out.....that's a new posting !
