Taliska Posted March 18, 2004 Report Posted March 18, 2004 Hi all, I'm considering buying Nokia phone holder (MBC-15S) and want to put it somewhere up on the dashboard. It's one of these... http://www.nokia.com/pics/phones/phone_models/enhancements/popups/enhancements_mbc_15s_pop.jpg Now I don't want to have unsightly holes left when it's eventually taken out or replaced - so any recommendations as to how to fix? I've wondered whether it would be possible to attach the bracket either in the gap at the top of the vent in the middle of the dash, or just inside the edge of the centre glovebox? I wish car manufacturers would come up a simple way of doing it that's the same on all cars - after all, they managed to get the cigarette lighter the same size and shape! Thoughts please (or alternative suggestions). Taliska Quote
Mussey1 Posted March 18, 2004 Report Posted March 18, 2004 You can buy a bracket specifically for the Galaxy from www.dashmount.co.uk. Mussey1. Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted March 18, 2004 Report Posted March 18, 2004 ...or see the other thread where I've shown my Siemens one mounted to a blank switch. The blanks cost only a couple of quid so dead easy to replace when you sell the car. Quote
Nige F Posted March 18, 2004 Report Posted March 18, 2004 Try this site. Have got the one that fits into the side of the dash and it is very good http://www.carphonekits.com Quote
Taliska Posted March 18, 2004 Author Report Posted March 18, 2004 Hi and thanks, Mussey1 - I thought Quote
_dg Posted March 18, 2004 Report Posted March 18, 2004 I am about to fit my holder ( for a P900) and have found good available spaces to be limited. Mines a touch screen phone so, I want to be able to tap it as needed Vent mounts are crap, and down by the console is a poor place too. The best places to put the phone for viewing the screen are just behind the steering wheel -below the instrument panel, or down by the headlight leveling switch. Anyway, I was not happy with any of the locations, and so decided to fit the phone on a bracket to the drivers door next to the window winder switches. My holder will allow me to angle it, and the phone backwards so that it lines up with the line of the door panel/handle. Cables will then go through the door panel and rubber grommet, to connect behind the fuse panel. There is lots of space between me and the door, so it is not in the way. Incidently, I've asked quite a few people on their opinions of fixing holders to dashboards, and not many are concerned with drilled holes. Bearing in mind that phone holders are becoming more common, a good position with drilled fixing, is prefered over a discrete bracket that puts the phone in a poor position. Holes are a non-issue, but bracket suppliers want you to think otherwise! Quote
Taliska Posted May 18, 2004 Author Report Posted May 18, 2004 After eventually deciding that I couldn't fit the Nokia holder without a bracket - I capitulated and bought the Dashmount one for the centre vent. All looked good, but it didn't quite fit. B) Now the fit is very tight and after pushing it in, it got stuck after about an inch. The reason - well there's a lip (on mine) coming in from the dashboard mounting and the bracket catches on that. Now I ripped the vent surround off to see what was happening inside - I don't recommend doing it as the plastic moulding suffered as a result and it's not in quite as good a shape as it was originally. B) I modified the bracket and it fits - now I superglued mine in as I reckon that any mobile phone holder will bolt to the bracket (with or without persuasion)... Here's a shot of the modified bracket... Quote
Taliska Posted May 18, 2004 Author Report Posted May 18, 2004 Now as you can see, I had the movable joint between the bracket and the holder still in and the holder was quite a way up off the dash and I felt that it might interfere with the controls... Quote
Taliska Posted May 18, 2004 Author Report Posted May 18, 2004 So I removed the joint and the holder went backwards towards the dash. There's room for the fingers to get behind the indicator lever. Quote
Taliska Posted May 18, 2004 Author Report Posted May 18, 2004 And another shot... I'd say that when the full beam is on, the use of the indicators is slightly compromised - I'm not sure how often one actually needs to indicate when the lights are on full... Quote
Taliska Posted May 18, 2004 Author Report Posted May 18, 2004 So, in essence, it's a good place to see and use the phone, it may be awkward to fit and it may interfere with the indicator controls. Hope this helps anyone considering the Dashmount vent kit. B) Taliska Quote
KenS Posted May 18, 2004 Report Posted May 18, 2004 My Nokia car kit phone holder is stuck on. A long plate runs front to back parallel with the left side of the radio and heater controls. This is on a Galaxy with climate control. My previous Galaxy (is there any other car?) did not have climate control but did have the very same car kit. On the old Galaxy, a special plate slid in the left side of the fascia. It was better positioned and much firmer that the stick on mount I have now. Happy chatting. Quote
Dally Posted May 18, 2004 Report Posted May 18, 2004 Why don't you guys consider using bluetooth kit. I keep my phone in my pocket and use a small rocker switch for all functions - works great! Quote
Taliska Posted May 18, 2004 Author Report Posted May 18, 2004 Difficult reading text messages when phone is in pocket B) Taliska Quote
MrT Posted May 19, 2004 Report Posted May 19, 2004 Difficult driving whilst reading text messages. Quote
MrT Posted May 19, 2004 Report Posted May 19, 2004 I tried the vent mount similar to the one shown in the picture but found it interefered with the indicator. I ended up screwing the Nokia mount to the curved surface that the back of the mount touches. This cleared the indicator and the screen can be seen whilst driving. Of course it will have marked the car if it is ever removed, but I am always going to have some kind of phone there. Quote
Dally Posted May 19, 2004 Report Posted May 19, 2004 Agree with Mr T - texting is a bit dodgy whist driving!!!!! Quote
