TheJugs Posted May 8, 2009 Report Posted May 8, 2009 I recently bought a Galaxy as spares or repair. It's the 2.3 GLX and the previous owner said the oil light had come on, pulled over, then engine wouldn't turn over. So before sourcing a donor unit i'm investigating possible causes and damage to current unit. So far I have removed rocker cover, all looks good, removed spark plugs, all ok, tried turning engine over via crank pulley, would only move 1/4 turn. Drained oil, came out really thick, removed sump, found what looks like thin metal shim like bits and plenty of smaller bits, removed oil pick up. Undone all the sump to block bolts so as it dropped couple of millimetres and now the engine will turn full cycles and blew the tissue paper out of the spark plug chambers, so has compression. I'm now thinking of removing timming cover, hopefully be able to drop the sump/balance shaft part off. Part of me say's keep going another say's just get a donor unit. Anyone got any thoughts or ideas ? When I purchased the vehicle I had it in mind to replace the engine but now ????????????? Quote

Ivor_E_Tower Posted May 8, 2009 Report Posted May 8, 2009 Metal shim-like bits sounds like bearing shells to me; plenty of smaller bits suggests that somethimng has broken up. If the bits have got into the oil pump, and then the oilways, they will almost certainly have scored (ie wrecked) other surfaces in the engine. Far, far safer to get another engine instead of trying to rebuild this one Quote
sepulchrave Posted May 8, 2009 Report Posted May 8, 2009 /signed That engine is toast. Sounds like it flipped a big end shell so the crank and at least one of the conrods will be wrecked, a catastrophic lubrication failure will ALWAYS get the big ends first, but every other moving part will have suffered as well and the naked eye won't tell you much about it. TheJugs Posted May 8, 2009 Author Report Posted May 8, 2009 Thanks for the input guys, unfotunately I make you right. Is the best way to remove the engine by taking the front end off or via subframe off and through the bottom ? Quote

Is the best way to remove the engine by taking the front end off or via subframe off and through the bottom ?out the bottom always works well for me as long as you have got enough room to lift the car up when you drop the engine down! When I purchased the vehicle I had it in mind to replace the engine but now ?????????????no i dont think there is a subframe, i did a diesel one about a month ago on a galaxy i bought with a dead engine and there was no subframe on it, i put a new dual mass flywheel, clutch, slave, waterpump, cambelt kit and various other parts on it, it took about 12-13 hrs on my own, and it actually went in really nicely, i would take out the engine and box at the same time though as i do...... have fun Quote
