Hi there, I have a 2002 V6 Mk2 Galaxy and today it has something running after I have switched it off and removed the keys. Whatever it is, sounds like a fan or motor running and to start with it ran for a couple of minutes and switched off. Then it came back on and ran for about one minute and then switched off again. Now it comes on about every five minutes and runs for about fifteen seconds each time. This has gone on for about four hours now. Any ideas? I have checked the technical forum but no luck.

P.s I have disconnected the battery for now to preserve it.

I believe its your auxilliary heater . You will probably find it about halfway along the nearside of the vehicle underneath and has a small exhaust and pipes running to and from. These take coolant from the engine and heat it using a small amount of diesel ignited by a glow plug. Lucky you , yours is working..lol... Im trying to sort mine out.

There is lots of info on this site covering this.

Enjoy.

It won't be your aux heater as you have a petrol V6!

There is an electrically operated water pump that runs for a while when you switch the engine off. This is to circulate the coolant for a while to prevent hot spots building up within the engine.

Why yours is switching on and off all the time I don't know. I would think a sensor somewhere.

Many thanks for rapid replies, I have a day to myself tomorrow so I guess I will spend some of it under the Galaxy!

it could also be the condenser fan of the air con

After switching off my V6 Gal, the condenser fan runs on for several minutes. sounds like a jet engine :P

It does however stop after a couple of minutes. It occasionally comes on again for a second or two whilst the sensor 'hunts', but only if it's very, very hot outside, so it sounds like you have some sort of sensor fault.

Try turning off the climate control for 10-15 minutes and see whether the fan still runs after you switch off, (I guess you have full climate control ?)

Ah the condensor fan has been running continuously for the past few weeks, maybe this problem is linked to that!

Sounds like the high pressure switch or relay on the a/c is faulty - it switches the fan on in order to cool the refrigerant in the condenser. You need to get this checked by an a/c specialist. He will be able to check the high side pressure against the fan activity.

Hope this helps, RHW
