Very Strange Wiper Problem

My 05 115TDI has developed a rather odd wiper fault.

When I switch on the ignition the motor makes a strange almost grinding sound, this goes on for a few seconds then the noise changes to a much louder version of the same noise. Sometimed this only happens for a short while, then the wipers jump up the screen and then everything works normally. Other times the noises go on for ages, but sometimed physically moving the wiper arms stops it. I'm sure its not the linkage as when they move its at a decent speed, and the motor can't be burnt out or they wouldn't move at all.

ANyone got any ideas?

As above, its not a simple thing either, but looks like it will come apart.
