Guest j_mchattie Posted March 17, 2004 Report Posted March 17, 2004 When i put my car into full lock (either stationary or whilst moving) there is a loud bang or a clonk form the right hand wheel. Usually only one, and it happens on either lock. Ive checked the wishbones - they are ok, is there anything else in particular to check? I have heard about a roll bar connecting rod that can cause problems - any ideas? Thanks for your help James Quote
Guest j_mchattie Posted March 22, 2004 Report Posted March 22, 2004 By the way, i have also heard about CV joints causing problems. Once the massive bang has happened, the tracking is way out - the car pulls to the right loads. The only way to correct this is to do a left full lock to make it go bang again, then its corrected! Do these symptoms mean anything to anyone? I can actually feel when its going to happen, the wheel passes the strain through to me. Thanks people James Quote
Guest nimrod Posted March 22, 2004 Report Posted March 22, 2004 I would check the condition of the track rod ends and the steering rack! get some one to sit in the car and turn the steering wheel lock to lock while you watch and feel what happens, while the wheel is on full lock see if you feel any play in the wheel bearing, track rod end, steering rack, or in the lower suspension arm bushes or ball joint? Guest j_mchattie Posted March 23, 2004 Report Posted March 23, 2004 Ok, not so good I had the car jacked up changing the oil, so i took the oppertunity to do the things you said. On turning the wheel (off the ground) the noise happened a long way before full lock. It sound like its a little further in than the O/S wheel - all the rubbers etc are good. I think its the steering rack so im a little worried about the cost. If i was to fit it myself, will it cost a lot for the rack? Ill get it checked out first, but i think i may have a bill coming up! Guest nimrod Posted March 25, 2004 Report Posted March 25, 2004 A mates mondeo did the same thing last week, while pulling out a parking space on full lock there was a large bang from the front end and one side suddenly dropped a couple of inches! the spring had snapped and collapsed over itself! his mechanic said its a common thing on mondeos! and he does at least a couple a month!
