i would see if you have a live at the bulb holder and if not trace the wires back to see where the fault lies testing for a live feed at every connection, have you had a tow bar fitted recently?

no tow bar fitted but just found out reverse lights are dead too so i'm thnking of just taking a hammer to the thing or maybe buying new light cluster ???

i doubt the faults are connected if the reversing lights dont work it is probably the reversing switch on the front of the gearbox or a loose connection.

Wires are broken where they pass through the gaiter into the tailgate upper right hand side.

 

Most likely there will be several broken ones ....copper broken inside not always visible as the outer plastic may still be ok.....wiggle them and watch what happens.

as big kev has said wires,this is a common fault and it is mentioned in the faqs in the technical section.
