N/s Door Mirror Glass Busted - How To Replace?

My wife managed to clash door mirrors with an oncoming car in Germany and broke the glass. Luckily the housing survived.

I've had a look and compared it with a flat mirror and the fitted mirrors appear to be slightly convex - is that normal for the Mk2 Ghia?

Also - how do I detach the broken mirror from the housing? Apparently there is a plastic backing plate - will I need to buy a new one of those as well?

Ebay has quite a few sellers, offering flat glass, convex and combi (with dotted line), plus they can supply the backing plates. My problem is knowing what to buy and how to fit.

Cheers

Its clipped, nothing more then that. The layers are: The mirror glass which is stuck to an electrical heating pad, which in turn is stuck to a plastic backing plate which clips to the motor assembly - its the plate you need to prise from the motor assembly.

If its not damaged (hard to damage them really) then you'll just need the mirror and some patience to clean the mirrors glue off but seperating the heating pad from the mirror isn't that fun and rarely sticks back onto another mirror easily so you might want to see if you can get one that comes with the pad already stuck.

Most vehicle mirrors are slightly convex as it allows for a greater field of vision from it - I would assume the galaxy is no different.

The best way to see what you need it to take the old one off. Tou see what damage there is and how it fits together. It's straightforward. If you need any more detailed instructions let me know.

Much obliged.

I'll try ripping out the broken one tomorrow and see whether the backing plate is reusable.

I'm glad I asked though - I hate pulling on a hidden plastic mechanism without knowing whether it just pops off or will be destroyed unless you twist first (or something).

Cheers.

Progress; broken unit came out after a very firm tug. It has a plastic plate and a heater pad behind the glass, all stuck together with the stickiest sticky-stuff since Sticky McSticky.

I levered off the busted glass with two screwdrivers - it took half and hour and was very awkward. Afterwards I used a multimeter to check I hadn't broken the heating element. The plastic backing plate seems to have survived too, so I've ordered a convex replacement glass for

Glass just turned up - perfectly fine, with good shape and convexity.

Only minor annoyance was they had helpfully stuck 4 strips of that sticky sponge stuff on the back, which I had to carefully pick off before it would stick flush onto the heating pad of my old backing plate.

Now back on the car and I can forget about it (until it falls off at speed).

Thanks again.

Now I need to find the motivation to look at the non-functioning cruise control and the busted rear windscreen washer.
