trish Posted April 13, 2009 Report Posted April 13, 2009 My 1.9 diesel galaxy(06reg) makes a whining noise just after I start it. This continues quite loudly until the engine warms up to 90degrees, then stops. I can't get it to do it again until the next day - it really has to be cold to do it, but would have stopped by the time I get to the dealer in order for them to listen to it! any ideas - still under guarantee until end of month so if expensive would like to get it done but no idea what it can be. gregers Posted April 13, 2009 Report Posted April 13, 2009 see if the supplying dealer will have the car overnight to check what the problem is first thing in the morning. Quote

smokie Posted April 15, 2009 Report Posted April 15, 2009 if your in any doubt Trish do what Gregers has suggested leave it with the garage over night and they can check it out. at least that way they are aware of the issue while the car is still under warranty. Probably is the aux heater but better safe than sorry. Quote
srafferty Posted April 15, 2009 Report Posted April 15, 2009 I have a whining noise inmy car. It appears to come from somewhere about the passenger side. It iis strangely absent when I' in the car on my own! Quote

It turned out to be the booster heater located underneathe the car. It is automatically started by the electronic control unit at a preset value of engine temperature and outside air temperature so you can't switch it off.(Not to be confused with the Auxillary Heater which is located inside the car for the rear passengers). Apparently the TDi models are so fuel efficient they dont generate enough engine heat to heat the interior for some time after start up. Hence the requirement for a booster heater. Quote
trish Posted April 17, 2009 Author Report Posted April 17, 2009 Thanks to everyone for your help - I am convinced it is the booster heater now I know I have one! Quote
