My 1999 2.8 Ghia X cut out yesterday. I was not far from home, and i was pulling off from some traffic lights, and the engine just cut out. I rolled into a lay-by, tried to start it up again, no joy. I left it a few hours and then i went and tried to start it again. Started no probs. Drove it home. When I went to try and start it this morning it would not start. I have recently changed the coil pack. Any help appreciated.

Oh no, not another one like this....

Could be fuel pump relay.

We're still trying to decide what do do with my parents' Volvo 850 2.5 10-valve which sometimes won't start when warm or hot, but if left for 20 to 30 minutes will start again with no problems. Engine management reports no faults, main dealers have had it twice and cannot find anything wrong. Volvo UK cannot add anything to the investigations either.

The fault can occur twice in 2 days, then not at all for a few months.

Once it did cut out when they were driving and this turned out to be the fuel pump relay but it hasn't sorted the "non-starting" problem. Nik, are you out there - any ideas???

How about a blocked fuel tank breather pipe? There was a thread on this ages ago; I seem to recall that the Galaxy has some incredibly complicated breather arrangement (naturally), instead of a little tube opening out of the filler tube cap.

If the breather is blocked, the fuel pump draws a partial vacuum in the tank and eventually can draw no more fuel; engine stops. The tank then sucks fuel and air back along the fuel pipe and when the pressure is high enough in the tank (takes a few minutes), you can start again. Then the pressure in the tank drops ...

Ivor, I'm here ;)

No, I'm afraid I couldn't help. Your parents Volvo is not a diesel. I have more expertise in Volvo-diesels (but not very much).

In case of the Galaxy: I realy don't know.

These are such a kind of problems nobody likes.

Many years ago my fathers Volvo 740 sometimes wanted to gou out. When switched off, the rpm's where raising! Only solution: put it in third gear and release rapidly the clutch! It was solved when they opened the engine, saw nothing special, assembled it and the problem was solved

I mean: it can be very difficult to find such a kind of problems.

success!

(Is fredt there? <_< )

I had a similar problem of cutting out when reaching Operating temp, it would restart when cooled a little.

When the fault occured I checked to make sure that I was getting a spark, to try and differentiate between electrical or fuel prob (spare spark plug and turn engine over ) My problem was electrical as no spark.

The actual problem was the crank position sensor failing at normal temp (unit was going out of resistance) and was actually shutting down the engine to prevent damage.

Just a thought....
