johdt Posted March 13, 2009 Report Posted March 13, 2009 Fitted towbar to my 2.2 today no real problems and if anybody is thinking the same can give advice. Also fitted Ford own dedicated wiring kit which again was quite straight forward but have stumbled on a couple of errors with it. I have e-mailed Ford about the errors and interestingly waiting there reply. But the sting in the tail that it's going to cost me Quote
trevorb Posted April 25, 2009 Report Posted April 25, 2009 John,About to get new Galaxy and need to fit towbar, what were the wiring problems? Told by dealer that if dont fit Ford wiring and there is an electrical fault, wont be covered under warranty Quote
hotleaduk Posted June 27, 2009 Report Posted June 27, 2009 John, I just tried to fit a Tow Trust towbar and i'm bit stump on how to remove the rear bumper. I have removed the 4 screws at the top and 1 screw on either side next to the rear wheel. Also two nuts underneath. The bumper is still fairly stuck to the car. Any advise. Thanks Quote
hotleaduk Posted June 27, 2009 Report Posted June 27, 2009 Managed to fit the tow bar (Tow trust TF176) now. Removing back bumper is straight forward if you have a small ratchet set.1. Remove 4 torx screws on bumper top edge and 2 torx screws either side.2. 2 10mm bolts on either side behind rear wheel.3. 2 screws behind wheel cover on either side behind rear wheel.4. Go underneath and disconnect the one wiring connector near where the towbar will be.5. Get a helper and pull out from each side and the whole rear bumper slides horizontally out. For the Tow trust mounting bar.1. Remove the original ford metal bump bar 3 10mm bolts left and 4 to the right.2. Slide the two tow bar mounting bars into the chassis rail that was hidden behind the bump bar.3. Tighten up bolts. nearside one slightly tricky as it is behind rear exhaust. Had to unhook the exhaust pipe at rear and middle.4. Cut the rear bumer 65mm and 230mm in to allow for the towbar.5. Put all back in. Notice that the underneath was full of mud so fixed rear mud flaps as well. The parking sensor are still working with constant noise at around 9inches from wall. Hope this helps anyone thinking of fitting a towbar Quote
hotleaduk Posted June 28, 2009 Report Posted June 28, 2009 Ooops spoke too soon, my parking sensors are playing up so removed towbar piece and all is well again. Will fit only when I need my maxxraxx bike rack. Quote
AndyBee Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 Did you fit any electrical wiring or just the towbar ? Quote
187469 Posted July 18, 2009 Report Posted July 18, 2009 John, Glad to hear you had no fitting problems as I am about to purchase one for my new(er) '56 plate. Has your Galaxy got rear parking sensors and if so, does a fixed tow ball interfere with there working? Has anyone else experienced problems as I don't want to folk out and extra Quote
johdt Posted July 21, 2009 Author Report Posted July 21, 2009 Colin I used the dedicated Ford wiring kit (13pin) which is actually a two part kit consisting of a wiring harness plus a relay box. Quite expensive but although I'm now retired as ex Ford I still get a 40% discount. If you use the ford kit when you connect the caravan plug it disables the rear parking sensors & fog lights plus also has a voltage controlled feed for the fridge. I was also concerned about using none Ford parts & warranty issues. I used Towtrust bar T174 which is plated at 90kg nose weight. John Quote
johdt Posted July 21, 2009 Author Report Posted July 21, 2009 Trevorb Apologies for not replying sooner but been away with the tin snail (caravan) in France & Spain & now trying to catch up with back log. You more than likely have had towbar electrics completed by now. However if it's any help the problems regarding the errors on fitting the Ford kit were nothing major. Simple but annoying things like kit is supplied with 2 square plastic inserts for screwing the relay to the body work but the holes in body work are round. No mention in kit about removing sound insulation material which is as tough as old boots & difficult to do & get too. No mention of removing existing wiring harness support clips as wires won't reach new relay box etc, etc. John Quote
Willisad Posted November 17, 2009 Report Posted November 17, 2009 John, Did you have to splice the parking sensor wire? If you did, which one is it? I am just working through the installation instructions and it mentions that a bown and white wire should be attached to the parking sensor wires, but doesn't say which one. Regards Adam Quote
